Every Spider-Man Villain In ‘Brand New Day’

The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is finally here after a long wait, and it suggests a massive, gritty Spider-Man movie. It will feature appearances from other Marvel characters like the Hulk and the Punisher, and Spider-Man will face a lot of villains from all over the Marvel Universe. While we don’t know who the main villain is yet, the trailer shows plenty of enemies ready to fight him.

We don’t know yet if all the villains shown will play a big role in the main plot, or if they’ll appear briefly in a scene that covers the four-year gap between Spider-Man: No Way Home and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Either way, Spider-Man: Brand New Day promises to bring characters from all over the Marvel Cinematic Universe together. Here’s a list of all the villains who will be in the movie.

Scorpion

Sony Pictures

Michael Mando is returning as Mac Gargan, also known as Scorpion, nine years after a brief appearance at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming. First appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man comic book in 1964, Scorpion is a villain created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this version of the character was introduced as a criminal looking to purchase a special weapon from Adrian Toomes/Vulture – a deal known as “The Gargan Tail.” It’s currently unclear whether the Scorpion’s tail seen in the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the original one built by Toomes’ team, or a new weapon provided by another criminal.

Boomerang

Sony Pictures

The villain Boomerang, whose real name is Fred Myers, will briefly appear in the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Gene Colan, he first appeared in Tales to Astonish #81 in 1966 as an enemy of the Hulk. Like DC’s Captain Boomerang, he’s known for fighting with boomerangs. Over the years, Boomerang has clashed with various Marvel heroes, including Iron Fist, Hawkeye, Daredevil, and Spider-Man. A memorable storyline involved him becoming Peter Parker’s roommate without realizing Peter was Spider-Man. While that could be a fun addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it currently seems Boomerang will only be a minor villain featured in a quick montage.

Tarantula

Sony Pictures

Tarantula is another villain expected to make a brief appearance in the upcoming movie. The character has been portrayed by several people in the comics, but the original Tarantula was Antonio Rodriguez, first appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #134 in 1974. Created by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru, most versions of Tarantula are experts in fighting and acrobatics. The initial version was particularly dangerous, equipped with razor-sharp claws on his fingers and spiked boots laced with drugs to knock out opponents.

The Hand

Sony Pictures

A surprising element in the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day was the appearance of the Hand, a dangerous ninja cult. First created by Frank Miller in 1981 for Daredevil, the Hand has grown into a worldwide criminal organization and played significant roles in several Marvel shows, including Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, Iron Fist season 1, and The Defenders. At the end of The Defenders, the group’s leaders were all defeated, and they haven’t been seen since. It will be fascinating to see if Spider-Man: Brand New Day acknowledges the Hand’s past in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and who is now in charge. The inclusion of both the Hand and the Punisher strongly suggests that Charlie Cox will make a guest appearance as Daredevil.

Tombstone

Marvel Comics

Notably absent from the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the character Tombstone. First appearing in Web of Spider-Man #36 in 1988, created by Gerry Conway and Alex Saviuk, Tombstone will be portrayed by Marvin Jones III, also known as Krondon. Krondon previously voiced the character in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but as a version from a different universe. Different versions of Tombstone will also appear in Spider-Man Noir and Season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Bill?

Sony Pictures

The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day introduced a mysterious character played by Trammell Tillman. While Marvel hasn’t revealed any official information, subtitles in the trailer identify him as “Bill.” This has led fans to believe he’s portraying William Metzger, a character from the X-Men: Children of the Atom comics. The name “Bill” is a shortened version of William, and the connection to the X-Men universe also strengthens the idea that Sadie Sink will be playing Jean Grey.

There’s a lot of talk that Bill will lead the Department of Damage Control (DODC) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Based on previous MCU shows and movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Ms. Marvel, and Wonder Man, this often means the DODC is portrayed as the enemy. The latest trailer suggests Spider-Man will initially work with Damage Control, trying to capture Sadie Sink’s character because he thinks she’s dangerous. However, it looks like he’ll eventually realize Damage Control is actually the villain and team up with Sadie Sink’s character instead. Bill and the DODC could very well be the main villains in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
