As a total movie and TV buff, I have to say few shows have stuck with me like American Gladiators. It debuted back in 1989, and the premise was just brilliant: everyday people going head-to-head with these incredible, larger-than-life athletes who looked like they walked out of a comic book. The show was the brainchild of Johnny C. Ferraro and ran for seven seasons, becoming a huge hit internationally – they made versions in the UK, Australia, Germany, and lots of other places! It really kicked off this whole wave of physical competition shows that we still see on TV today. They even tried to bring it back on NBC in 2008, but that version didn’t last. Now, thankfully, with the original creator Johnny C. Ferraro leading the charge, Prime Video is giving American Gladiators another go, and this time it’s aiming to be bigger and more global than ever before.
The reboot of American Gladiators is coming to Prime Video! The first three episodes will be available on April 17, 2026, with three more on April 24, and the final four on May 1. WWE’s Mike “The Miz” Mizanin will host, with Rocsi Diaz reporting from the sidelines. The entire 10-episode season will be available to stream in over 240 countries at the same time. Like the original show, this revival will pit 16 new Gladiators – athletes from CrossFit, wrestling, bodybuilding, and college sports – against everyday challengers, called Contenders. They’ll compete for a $100,000 prize and the title of American Gladiator Champion.
The American Gladiators Revival Is Right to Bet on Nostalgia

As a huge fan of the original American Gladiators, I’m so excited to hear that the new Prime Video version is bringing back everything we loved! They’ve confirmed that classic events like Joust, Powerball, Hang Tough, and The Wall will all be there, which is exactly what I wanted to hear. It sounds like they really learned from the mistakes of the 2008 revival, which had a big debut but quickly lost viewers. People back then said it felt too fake and relied too much on celebrity hosts like Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali instead of the raw energy of the original. This new version seems to be focusing on the competitions themselves, and that’s a huge relief!
Lauren Anderson, head of brand and content innovation at Amazon MGM Studios, explained when the show was first announced that they aimed to blend fresh ideas with the beloved elements of the original series. Prime Video appears to be following a similar format to the classic American Gladiators while adding new challenges, a strategy that could make the reboot a global success thanks to the streaming platform’s wide audience.
American Gladiators premieres April 17, 2026, on Prime Video.
