After the announcement that Smiling Friends will conclude after its third season, Adult Swim was looking for some positive news. Fortunately, the network has been developing new series to take the place of Charlie and Pim. While Adult Swim plans more seasons of shows like Ha Ha, You Clowns and Rick and Morty, another potential hit is on the way. A new animated spin-off, arriving later this year, might even get renewed for a second season before the first season has finished airing.
A recent report from Variety confirms that California is providing tax credits to several entertainment productions, including the live-action series The Pitt, I Love LA and Rooster. This also includes a boost for Adult Swim, specifically a second season of President Curtis. While Adult Swim hasn’t officially announced the renewal, these tax credits strongly suggest it’s happening. The Rick and Morty spin-off, featuring Keith David as the head executive, is expected to arrive later this year, hinting at a promising future for the series.
Adult Swim’s Oval Office Series Explained

If you need a quick recap, or haven’t seen Rick and Morty and the adventures of President Curtis, here’s what you should know about this character. Voiced by Keith David, President Curtis first showed up in season two, needing Rick Sanchez’s help with a bizarre alien invasion. Since then, he’s repeatedly turned to Rick for assistance, or told him to mind his own business. Though we don’t have a release date yet for the spin-off series, Keith David has given some hints about what’s in store.
At last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, David talked about his experience playing President Curtis and hinted at what’s coming in the new spin-off series. He said he’s really enjoyed the role and is excited to delve deeper into the character’s world. He promised fans plenty of excitement and trouble as President Curtis takes center stage without Rick around.
Adult Swim has revealed details about the upcoming spin-off, President Curtis, which will focus on the President and his unusual team dealing with problems Rick Sanchez would ignore – things like negotiating with other dimensions and investigating strange, unexplained events. Meanwhile, Rick and Morty is coming back with its ninth season this May, premiering on Cartoon Network on May 24th.
