Firefly star confirms iconic role will be recast for new animated series

Nathan Fillion, known for his role in the beloved show Firefly, has shared details about the upcoming animated series, revealing that a famous character will be voiced by a new actor.

After years of hoping, fans of the sci-fi show Firefly got exciting news this week: Nathan Fillion and the original cast have confirmed a revival is in the works! An animated series is currently being developed and seems to be making good progress.

The original stars of the show – Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Adam Baldwin – are returning to reprise their roles. Sadly, Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Book, passed away in 2016 and will not be able to participate.

Nathan Fillion confirmed to Deadline that the character Shepherd Book will definitely return, but sadly, Ron Glass is unable to reprise the role.

Ron playfully pointed out the irony that he wasn’t cast in a role because they were searching for someone like him, and now the situation has repeated itself. Once again, they’re looking for an actor who resembles Ron Glass, but, sadly, it won’t be the man himself.

The actor shared that they believe the animated series is something the person it honors would have truly enjoyed.

Book was a spiritual leader on the ship Serenity, and a trusted friend and voice of reason to the crew. His past is shrouded in mystery, and a potential animated series could delve deeper into it.

There’s no news just yet on who could take on the role.

I was so thrilled to hear the Firefly animated series is really happening! At Awesome Con in Washington DC, Nathan Fillion and the team shared some incredible concept art, which shows just how much work they’ve already put into it. The biggest hurdle now is finding a network or streaming service to actually air the show, but seeing that art gave me so much hope!

When the news was released, Nathan Fillion explained that the continued passion of Firefly fans is what has kept the show popular after all these years. He stated that bringing the show back is not only what fans want, but also what they’ve earned.

I was so excited to hear about the new Firefly project, but it seems Joss Whedon isn’t directly involved, though Nathan Fillion mentioned he does support it. It’s been a while since we’ve seen much from Whedon, especially after the claims about difficult working conditions on his shows – claims he’s always disputed. I hope he’s doing okay and that this new series can capture the magic of the original.

Firefly is available to stream on Disney+ UK. Sign-up to Disney+ from £5.99 a month.
