The epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time, originally written by Robert Jordan and later finished by Brandon Sanderson, continues to capture imaginations, though its television adaptation on Amazon Prime was recently cancelled after three seasons. Jordan initially planned a shorter story, but his writing often expanded, ultimately resulting in a 15-book series (including a prequel). Despite the author’s passing, the story lived on thanks to Sanderson, and briefly made its way to the screen.
Fans of The Wheel of Time have exciting news! Variety reports that a lot of new projects are being developed thanks to a collaboration between iwot Studios, who owns the rights to the series, and Thomas Vu, the producer of Arcane (and a veteran of League of Legends). Here’s what’s in the works:
- A series of Wheel of Time animated feature films
- A new animated TV series based on The Wheel of Time
- A new Wheel of Time PC / mobile video game
The new game is designed to attract more players across different devices and connect with fans globally, while the TV show and movies will focus on a younger audience to build a stronger following for this fantasy series. These projects join previously announced plans for a 3D movie, The White Tower, a live-action film called Age of Legends directed by Kari Skogland, and a large-scale, open-world role-playing game. Vu also shared an early look at a concept for the character Rand al’Thor.

The Wheel of Time Is Returning, & Will Be Better Than Ever

Featuring Rosamund Pike, Josha Stradowski, Zoë Robins, and Madeleine Madden, The Wheel of Time was a fantasy series that unfortunately ended before it reached its full potential. Each season was noticeably better than the last, as the show’s creators became more comfortable with the source material. However, the news of an animated adaptation is genuinely thrilling, because animation is a much more effective way to bring the grand scope of Jordan’s fantasy world to life.
We’re especially excited about Vu joining the project. His work on Arcane was a huge success – it’s widely considered one of the best video game adaptations ever made. He’ll bring incredible talent to visualizing the world of the Continent, and animation is a perfect way to showcase the powerful abilities of characters like Rand, the Dark One, the Forsaken, and the Aes Sedai. Vu will be collaborating with Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon from iwot Studios, and their past experience with a similar project will help them avoid previous issues.
Vu expressed excitement about the potential to build on The Wheel of Time with immersive storytelling across various platforms, including interactive and animated experiences. He believes the rich backstory of the series will allow the franchise to grow and endure. While his comments might seem focused on business, his experience suggests this new iteration of The Wheel of Time has a strong chance of lasting much longer than the previous attempt. It’s a fresh start, and the beloved story is ready to be rediscovered by a new generation.
