3 1990s Classic Series Returning With Anime Adaptations in 2026

For many years, the anime and manga world has been largely focused on action-packed series aimed at young boys, known as ‘Shonen.’ Many of the most popular manga ever, like One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, and Demon Slayer, fall into this category. While stories geared towards young girls, called ‘Shojo,’ don’t usually get as much international attention, they often stand out for their original and creative narratives.

The 1990s were a fantastic time for both Shonen and Shojo manga, with many beloved classics being created. Sadly, despite positive reviews, a lot of these great series never got turned into anime. However, 2026 looks promising for Shojo fans, as three classic manga are finally getting anime adaptations.

3) Hana-Kimi

This love story first appeared in 1996 and is now being adapted into an anime series, premiering in Winter 2026. It follows Mizuki Ashiya, who falls deeply in love with Izuki Sano after watching him compete in a high jump. Driven by her feelings, she moves all the way from the United States to Japan to attend the same school as him.

Izumi attends a school for boys only, so Mizuki disguises herself as a boy to blend in. As of now, there’s no official announcement about a second season of the anime, despite there being a lot of the story left to tell.

2) Red River: Anatolia Story

The popular fantasy novel is getting an anime adaptation in Summer 2026, though the specific release date is still to come. The story follows Yuri Suzuki, who unexpectedly finds herself transported to another timeline right before starting college, while on a date with her boyfriend.

Yuri suddenly finds herself transported back to the Hittite Empire in the 14th century BC, a time of royal power struggles. She’s caught up in a dangerous situation, marked for sacrifice as part of the battle for the throne. When she meets Prince Kyle, a strong contender for the crown, her life takes an unexpected turn, and she begins to win over the hearts of those around her.

1) From Far Away: Kanata Kara

A popular isekai series from the 1990s is finally getting an anime adaptation this year. While a specific release date hasn’t been announced, the anime is being made to celebrate the series’ 35th anniversary. It will be directed by Noriyuki Abe, who is known for his work on famous anime like Bleach and Yu Yu Hakusho.

Noriko Tachiki is a typical high school student who keeps dreaming about a stunning fantasy world. One day, after an accident, she finds herself magically transported to that very world. When faced with dangerous creatures, she’s rescued by a man named Izark Kia Tarj. As the story unfolds, Noriko begins to uncover the secrets of this new world and a frightening fate that may be awaiting her.
