Be warned, this article contains spoilers for episode 4 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2! Season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has been heavily focused on the complicated relationship between Keiko Miura and Lee Shaw, revealing new details of their forbidden love with each episode. However, the ending of episode 3 suggested their romance was over, as Keiko sent Lee a letter ending things.
Years later, Bill Randa surprisingly discovered the letter he’d been searching for. The fourth episode of the series expands on this storyline with two key events. We see Billy’s initial reaction to the discovery in the past, and then the same shocking moment happens again with someone close to Keiko in the present. Meanwhile, the plots involving Titanus X and Apex Cybernetics also continue to develop.
What Hiroshi’s Shocking Discovery Means
The saying ‘like father, like son’ really applies to Billy and Hiroshi. Billy acted as a father to Hiroshi, and ultimately became his last remaining parental figure after Keiko vanished into the Axis Mundi. Just as Billy discovered a letter in the past, Hiroshi finds one at the end of this episode, and it’s obvious he’s going to be very angry.
The Apple TV+ series effectively shows how young Hiroshi felt when Billy left him. The episode begins with Billy receiving a letter from Keiko, after which he embarks on a journey around the world. His possessions are lost at sea for years, eventually washing up at Monarch in 2015.
Although Monarch: Legacy of Monsters hasn’t fully revealed Billy’s history yet, it’s clear that Hiroshi immediately believes his mother and uncle were responsible for his father leaving after reading the letter. His angry look at Keiko suggests a disagreement is about to happen.
This highlights Hiroshi’s affection for both Kentaro and Cate’s mothers, as he unknowingly mirrored his own mother’s life. The question now is whether understanding this connection will help him cope with the revelation that Keiko’s choices resulted in him being raised without either parent. Only time will tell if it will bring him peace.
Cate’s Return Explained
Cate has been struggling for a while now. Throughout the first season, painful memories of G-Day occasionally resurfaced, influencing her decisions. This was made worse when, trying to repay Lee for saving her, she brought him back from the Axis Mundi, which unintentionally unleashed Titan X upon the world.
Cate was overwhelmed and needed a break from her work at Monarch. She believed returning to the city where she experienced trauma was the only way to heal. In episode 4, she realizes she made a positive difference in people’s lives, even during difficult times, when she meets a child she helped during Godzilla’s attack on San Francisco.
Cate nearly lost hope after the third episode, but a crucial encounter revitalized her, motivating her to help Lee Shaw and the team face the threat of Titan X. Early in the season, Cate realizes she doesn’t want to be a helpless victim of the kaiju; she wants to be empowered to protect others.
Cate has a special ability that could help people understand Titan X. Like Keiko before her, she seems to be able to sense when the kaiju is near, even before others do. The extent of this connection is still unknown.
What’s Going On With Corah And Apex Explained
In season 2, episode 4 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the main storyline follows Shaw and his team as they attempt to break into Apex and retrieve Hiroshi’s device, hoping to prevent the emergence of Titan X. They receive help from Corah/May, who is secretly working inside Apex at Tim’s direction, but their plan doesn’t go smoothly.
Okay, so after a lot of near misses, the Monarch team finally figures out that Apex Cybernetics got to Hiroshi’s device before they did – it’s already been taken apart! But it wasn’t a total loss. May made a huge discovery: Apex isn’t just messing with monsters, they’re trying to control them. Their plan is to use these inhibitor chips to basically shut down the kaiju’s natural instincts, making them completely docile. It’s a terrifying thought, honestly – imagine these powerful creatures just…obedient. It definitely raises the stakes for everyone involved.
Apex’s main goal – a peaceful partnership, or at least the version they shared with May – depended on her helping them improve their microchips, which currently only function for a short period. The success of this hinges on Corah’s unique code, a revelation that drives a major plot twist in episode 4. Ultimately, May decides to remain and collaborate with Apex.
Billy’s Game-Changing Findings Explained
Okay, so season two of Monarch finally answers what Billy was up to during his travels! Turns out, Dr. Randa managed to finish the map showing where Titanus Rex – or Titan X as they call her – is migrating. That was huge, because it meant Lee, Keiko, and the team could actually figure out where she’s headed. It’s funny, because all that time, Apex’s tracker wasn’t showing Titanus Rex at all! They were just following a whale the whole time. Can you believe it?
Billy’s map points to Titan X heading to a familiar place for both the characters and the audience: Santa Soledad. It will be compelling to return to this location after decades, recalling when Billy, Lee, and Keiko first discovered Titan X there. With Cate’s return and her shared history with Keiko regarding Titan X, combined with Billy’s map, the team should be able to figure out the kaiju’s motives in season 2 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
