Be warned, this contains spoilers for Outlander season 8, episode 3! In the latest episode, “Abies Fraseri,” Jamie discovers what Captain Charles Cunningham is really planning, and he’s upset by it. The episode begins with Brianna and Fanny enjoying a shopping trip to the trading post, which is a nice moment for them. However, the atmosphere changes when two men start harassing Fanny. After they leave, Fanny explains to Brianna that they seemed like officers, and she recognized their behavior from observing customers at the brothel where she was raised.
I knew something was off the moment I saw those men at the trading post – it felt like a major warning sign for this season of Outlander. We’ll get into all that later, but let me tell you, a lot happens before Jamie figures out what’s really going on with Captain Cunningham. It all starts with a letter from Lord John Grey, and honestly, it just reopened old wounds for Jamie. Apparently, John wants Brianna to come to Savannah to paint a portrait of Ben Grey’s widow and her son, and Jamie was immediately annoyed. He forbade both Brianna and Claire from getting involved, which, predictably, didn’t sit well with anyone.
The latest Outlander episode features a major argument between Jamie and Claire regarding Lord John Grey, alongside several other storylines. William continues to investigate his cousin Ben’s death, and while he doesn’t uncover the truth, he does grow closer to Ben’s widow. The episode also offers more insight into the complex relationship between Lord John and Percy Beauchamp, who asks Lord John for a favor related to Fergus Fraser. A particularly dramatic moment occurs when Claire miraculously revives a stillborn baby, a key event in season 8, episode 3.
All of this leads to a showdown between Jamie and Captain Charles Cunningham. Despite being a likable man, Jamie has struggled to trust him, and this episode of Outlander reveals that his instincts were correct – Cunningham isn’t actually retired from the army.
Charles Cunningham Is Raising A Loyalist Militia On Fraser’s Ridge
While walking in the woods with Fanny, Jamie hears gunfire and finds out that Benjamin Cleveland has shot and killed two men who had been at the trading post. Cleveland happily explains they were smuggling guns onto Fraser’s Ridge. Jamie prevents Cleveland from hanging the bodies and instead buries them, but first, he searches them and finds a letter addressed to Captain Cunningham.
Jamie challenges Cunningham, explaining that despite the letter appearing ordinary, certain words suggest a hidden meaning. After finding a key at the trading post, Jamie uses it to decode the letter, revealing a secret message. The letter, it turns out, is from Major Patrick Ferguson, who promises to deliver new weapons and asks for more soldiers.
Now that the truth is revealed, Cunningham has to tell Jamie everything: he never actually retired from the British army. Instead, he’s been building a group of loyalists right on Fraser’s Ridge. Jamie is understandably furious. Cunningham tries to reason with him, suggesting Jamie join his side, believing their beliefs aren’t as far apart as they seem. He urges Jamie to help the king win the war, hoping it will finally bring peace. The episode ends with Jamie left to think about Cunningham’s proposal.
How Claire Resurrected The Stillborn Baby & What That Means For Faith
While the major reveal about Cunningham was a key part of the ending of Outlander season 8, episode 3, Claire successfully delivering a baby served as the episode’s most dramatic moment. Earlier, a woman named Suzannah arrived at the Fraser house while in labor and in urgent need of assistance. Claire discovered Suzannah was carrying twins, but their positioning was making the delivery difficult. Fortunately, Claire was able to use her medical skills to safely deliver both babies.
The first baby is born healthy, but complications arise with the second. The infant appears lifeless at birth, and Claire desperately tries to revive her, though she and Jamie both realize it’s futile. Jamie watches, heartbroken, as Claire is overwhelmed by the memory of losing their daughter Faith in France. We see this experience through Claire’s eyes – she grieves over the baby, haunted by visions of Faith, blue wings, and the voice of Master Raymond.
Unexpectedly, the baby who had been stillborn began to cry, a truly remarkable event. Claire was skilled in traditional medicine, but this felt like something beyond science – pure magic. Later, when Jamie asked how it happened, Claire described feeling a blue light flow from her into the baby, a sensation she’d previously experienced when Master Raymond healed her in France. This led her to wonder if the mysterious Master Raymond had used a similar power to revive Faith, much like Claire had saved Suzannah’s daughter.
William & Amaranthus’ Big Kiss Explained
William is facing ongoing challenges in season 8 of Outlander. Previous seasons were difficult for him, marked by revelations about his father and his inability to save Jane. Now, he’s dealing with the news of his cousin Ben’s death while held captive by rebels. In episode 2 of season 8, William finds evidence suggesting Ben might still be alive, as the grave doesn’t contain his cousin’s remains. Unfortunately, investigations in episode 3 make Ben’s survival seem improbable.
At a luncheon, William cautiously asks Major General Lesley, Ben’s superior officer, about what happened to Ben, hoping Lesley might know something if Ben had lived. It quickly becomes apparent that the Major General has no reason to doubt the rebels’ story of Ben’s death at the camp. When William returns his cousin’s uniform to Amarathus and finds a small tin soldier – a gift he’d given Ben – among her possessions, he realizes he must finally accept that Ben is gone and end his search for answers.
William is struggling to come to terms with Ben’s death, but it appears to be leading him towards a new, complex relationship. He and Amaranthus already felt a connection, and a recent walk in the garden confirmed their mutual attraction. While Amaranthus’s playful behavior is clearly flirting, William still seems shocked when she kisses him – a kiss he immediately returns. He clearly feels guilty afterward, but it’s obvious that William and Amaranthus will share many more intimate moments as the story unfolds.
Percy Beauchamp Is Searching For Fergus Fraser
A notable scene in Outlander season 8, episode 3 occurred during the luncheon celebrating Major General Lesley. Lord John Grey and Percy Beauchamp shared a secret conversation, revealing their complex past. They were once romantically involved, but their relationship ended badly. Now, Percy is asking Lord John for a favor: he’s been trying to contact Fergus, Jamie’s adopted son, without success, and hopes Lord John can help him get in touch.
Lord John said he’d help, but only if Percy could find Captain Richardson. Richardson was a spy who kidnapped William as part of a blackmail scheme against Lord John. He’s been missing for a while, and both Lord John and William want him brought to justice.
Roger & Brianna Want To Use The Jacobite Gold To Buy Weapons In Savannah
As mentioned before, Lord John has asked Brianna to travel to Savannah to paint a portrait of Amaranthus and her child. Though Jamie doesn’t approve, Brianna accepts the invitation. However, she has a hidden reason for wanting to go. It seems that the Battle of King’s Mountain, which Frank detailed in his book, is going to happen, as shown in season 8 of Outlander. If they can’t prevent the battle, Brianna and Roger want to make sure their friends have enough weapons, and Savannah offers a good chance to purchase them.
Brianna and Roger intend to buy what they need using gold Jamie had previously hidden. Jamie initially objects, but his anger towards Lord John is the real reason. He originally gave the gold to Brianna, so she’s entitled to spend it as she wishes. Once Jamie and Claire resolve their issues with Lord John, Roger and Brianna are free to make the purchase.
What The Ridge’s Looming Battle Means for Outlander Season 8
Initially, everyone wanted to dismiss Frank’s warning about the Revolutionary War reaching Fraser’s Ridge. But with the arrival of Benjamin Cleveland and the discovery that Cunningham is building an army, it’s becoming clear that war is inevitable. Jamie will definitely not side with the British, as Cunningham expects, meaning these two men are destined to be enemies on the battlefield. It remains to be seen if Frank was right about Jamie dying at the Battle of King’s Mountain, and we’ll likely find out in future episodes of Outlander season 8.
