This year is already shaping up to be fantastic for science fiction movies, and the best one might be coming out in December. That’s when Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three is scheduled for release, and it looks to be another incredible, visually impressive epic with stunning effects and great acting. Expectations are high, as the first two Dune movies were both critical and commercial successes, even earning Best Picture nominations. Although Dune 3 is opening on the same weekend as Avengers: Doomsday, it has the potential to be the biggest movie event of the holiday season for many film fans.
With nine months until the release of Dune: Part Three, Warner Bros. has begun promoting the film with new character posters and a first look at the trailer. Notably, all the promotional materials describe Dune: Part Three as “the epic conclusion,” which is unusual since there are more Dune novels that could potentially be made into movies. Currently, it appears the studio intends to end the Dune film series with director Denis Villeneuve’s next installment.
Why Is Dune 3 The Franchise’s Final Film?

There are several reasons why the filmmakers are ending the series after three movies. Director Denis Villeneuve plans to move on to other projects, including the next James Bond film, after he finishes Dune: Part Three. While some fans hoped another director could continue the series, it’s probably best to conclude it with Villeneuve’s planned trilogy. He’s become so closely associated with Dune and set such a high standard for quality that it would be hard for anyone else to successfully direct the films. Villeneuve has expertly brought Frank Herbert’s complex novels to life on screen, and that’s a difficult achievement.
The main reason we likely won’t see more Dune movies after this year isn’t Denis Villeneuve’s future plans, but rather the direction Frank Herbert took the novels. The later Dune books became increasingly bizarre and would be incredibly challenging to turn into a large-scale blockbuster. As the series went on, Herbert introduced ideas like Paul Atreides’ son becoming a human-worm hybrid emperor and powerful, controlling nuns. These concepts aren’t exactly suited for a mainstream, PG-13 sci-fi movie. Plus, many of the characters audiences know and love disappear from those later books, making any film adaptation even more difficult to justify.
It’s interesting that the next Dune movie is titled Dune: Part Three instead of Dune: Messiah. Most people expected Messiah to be the source material for the third film, but that book contains problematic parts that needed to be altered. Specifically, a storyline involving a clone of Duncan Idaho and Paul’s young sister Alia will likely be left out. The title suggests that director Villeneuve isn’t strictly adapting Messiah, but is instead combining elements from multiple Dune sequels—including Children of Dune, supported by the casting of Paul and Chani’s twins—to create a film that stays true to Herbert’s vision and provides a strong ending to the series.
If Dune: Part Three does well, some studio heads might want to make more movies, but that would be a mistake. The Dune books are famously difficult to adapt – even the later ones are incredibly complex, and even a skilled director like Villeneuve would struggle with them. Replacing Villeneuve would be nearly impossible, and a fourth movie could easily ruin the quality of the first two. While there are more books to cover, sometimes it’s best to leave a story unfinished, especially when the original vision is so strong.
