Grey’s Anatomy’s latest tragedy may have fans hoping to lay here and just forget the world.
On the March 19th episode of the popular ABC show, the developing relationship between Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) and cancer patient Katie Rogers (Samantha Marie Ware) ended tragically when Katie passed away. Many viewers noted that this heartbreaking storyline from season 22 felt similar to a famous and emotional moment from the show’s history.
That’s right, it was the heartbreaking relationship between Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Dr. Izzie Stephens (Katherine Heigl) during the second season.
As a longtime Grey’s Anatomy fan, I was really heartbroken watching the latest episode. It felt like they were repeating the same painful pattern with these new characters – building a strong connection and then seemingly tearing them apart, just like they did with Denny and Izzie. The actors have amazing chemistry, and it’s just so frustrating to see that potentially wasted.
One viewer pleaded for the show to avoid repeating a storyline similar to Denny and Izzie’s, saying, “Please, no more of that!” Another commenter simply pointed out the current plot felt like a repeat of that same situation.
Fans were proven right, as several couples met while one person was a patient and the other a doctor. Denny and Izzie, and Lucas and Katie, all found love this way, but their stories ultimately ended in heartbreak.
Before Katie passed away, she moved into a house with Lucas and Simone to receive end-of-life care for her stomach cancer. In one emotional scene, Katie and Lucas shared a final, intimate moment in bed, where they talked about their feelings and imagined the life they might have had together in New York City.
Lucas and Simone had a fight because Lucas wanted to continue providing life-sustaining care for Katie. The argument escalated when Simone hid medication that would have made Katie more comfortable. Lucas went to Grey Sloan Memorial hoping to find a solution, but Katie passed away before he could get back home.

Twenty years ago, Denny was a heart patient who needed a transplant. He fell in love with an intern named Izzie, and she risked her career by tampering with his medical device to help him get moved higher on the transplant waiting list.
Despite receiving a heart transplant, Denny tragically suffered a stroke and passed away in his hospital room before Izzy could arrive. He died alone just hours after the surgery.

Even though many characters have died throughout the show’s run, creator Shonda Rhimes has said that Denny’s death remains the most upsetting for her.
She confessed on the

Little Mousey, who often felt overlooked and strange, tragically died trying to help Richard. She found him unconscious on the ground and, stepping into the same water puddle that had shocked him, was electrocuted herself. It was a well-intentioned but unfortunate accident. This loss deeply affected Shane, who spiraled into self-blame. Exhausted and distraught, he made a fatal error during surgery, resulting in the death of Alex’s father. It was a terrible chain of events.
Tear count: Sorry Heather, our eyes were dry.

Reed wasn’t a particularly sympathetic character – in fact, she was arguably the least liked of the Mercy West doctors – but her death was a huge shock. It came completely out of the blue when Gary Clark, recently widowed, suddenly pulled a gun and shot her. That single gunshot started the hospital shooting storyline, which remains incredibly impactful even now.
This death didn’t elicit any tears, mainly because we weren’t invested in Reed’s character and were simply too stunned to react emotionally.

That extended farewell was truly heartbreaking. Seeing George suffer through it was agonizing, and it led to his rushed decision to marry Callie – a storyline many of us would prefer to forget. However, it did finally give us that powerful and much-needed connection between George and Cristina.
Tear count: Several for poor George.

Watching Ellis go was…hard. It felt like losing her ages ago, honestly, with the Alzheimer’s stealing her away bit by bit. But when she finally passed, it was almost peaceful. And that last thing she said… “You are anything but ordinary.” It just…it unlocked something in Meredith. It was the closure she desperately needed, a final acknowledgment that she was worthy, that she was enough. It still gives me chills thinking about it, honestly. It was everything.
A single tear fell, born from the relief that Meredith finally received a meaningful goodbye from her mother.

Pink mist. Never forget.
We weren’t so much upset about what happened to the Bomb Squad guy as we were overwhelmed by the tension of the episode, which brought tears to our eyes.

April and Jackson’s baby was born early because the child had a very rare and severe bone condition called Type 2 osteogenesis imperfecta. Sadly, the baby only lived for a few minutes. This was a heartbreaking storyline, and we were deeply moved by April and Jackson’s strength as they faced this incredibly difficult situation.
Tear count: So, so many.

The hospital shooting tragically claimed many lives, but one death was particularly heartbreaking because it felt preventable. Despite being seriously injured, the patient could have been saved if Dr. Bailey had been able to get him to surgery. When she discovered the SWAT team had cut the power to the elevators, she knew it was too late. Though devastated, Bailey remained composed, focusing on making the patient’s final moments as comfortable as possible.
At first, Bailey only shed a few tears, but when she had to tell Charles he was dying, she broke down completely, sobbing uncontrollably. However, she reassured him that everything would be alright.

Even though the chief had grieved the loss of his wife long before she passed – she’d had Alzheimer’s and developed a connection with someone else at the nursing home – her death was still incredibly painful. Bailey put her wedding on hold to try and save Adele, but sadly Adele died that same day. Despite his own heartbreak, Richard still made it to Bailey’s wedding to be there for his friend, which was a truly selfless act.
Meredith started crying—first just a few tears, then full-on sobbing—when Richard shook his head to tell her the bad news about Adele.

While Henry initially married Teddy for practical reasons, they genuinely fell in love, which made his sudden illness even more devastating. They were just starting their life together when he needed urgent surgery, and tragically, Cristina couldn’t save him – not knowing she was operating on Teddy’s husband. The reveal that the patient she lost was Teddy’s husband was shocking. To make things worse, Owen delayed telling Teddy, as she was in the middle of performing her own surgery. It was a truly difficult situation.
Tear count: Hiccup-ugly-crying.

It was heartbreaking for Lexie. After longing for Mark Sloan for so long, she finally found happiness with him – but only during a tragic plane crash. While she was fatally injured, struggling to breathe, she and Mark shared their love and dreamed of a future they both knew they wouldn’t have.
Tear count: steady streams of water running down our cheeks.

Everyone remembers the iconic towel scene with Mark Sloan, aka ‘McSteamy,’ on Grey’s Anatomy, and he remains the show’s most memorable romantic interest. His death in the plane crash was particularly heartbreaking. Not only did he witness Lexie’s tragic passing, but he also endured the agonizing realization that he was dying himself, allowing him a painful goodbye to his loved ones and daughter. He will be dearly missed. Rest in peace, McSteamy.
Tear count: All these years later, we’re still crying.

We’ll always remember the shock of realizing Meredith discovered John Doe was actually 007 – George O’Malley! It was a truly breathtaking moment, like something out of a TV show. While his departure from the series was incredibly sad and dramatic – seriously, a bus accident! – he died a hero, selflessly jumping in front of the bus to save a stranger.
We cried really hard – big, messy sobs. Just remembering it makes us want to cry all over again.

Derek Shepherd’s death on Grey’s Anatomy was incredibly shocking, but many fans feel it didn’t have the emotional impact it deserved. Because it happened so quickly and the show moved on so rapidly – skipping ahead a year in just one episode – it felt rushed and unreal. It’s hard to accept that McDreamy is really gone!
Tear count: Total dehydration, since we cried all the water in our bodies out.

The death of DeLuca was incredibly impactful for so many reasons. It unfolded across both Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy, and it had been a long time since a major character had died on either show. The timing was particularly devastating – it happened right after he finally apprehended the child kidnapper he’d been relentlessly pursuing, following a difficult struggle with his mental health. It genuinely felt like he was going to be okay, making his death even more shocking. The scenes of him saying goodbye to Meredith during her COVID-19 coma and reuniting with his mother as he died were deeply moving. And unlike Derek’s death, there were no advance spoilers, so we were completely unprepared. We mourned for days, even while speaking with Giacomo Gianniotti, and weeks later, the memory of it still brings tears to our eyes. We’re still heartbroken.
Tear count: Gross, messy, embarrassing river of sobs.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen a lot of emotional TV moments, but Denny Duquette’s death on Grey’s Anatomy truly stands out as one of the most devastating. After everything he went through – the LVAD complications, the heart transplant – to have him pass away right when his happiness was within reach, and alone, was just heartbreaking. It happened early in the show’s run, when we were all so invested, and the storyline was given the weight it deserved. Honestly, it’s a death that will stay with viewers forever – that image of Izzie in her pink gown, being held by Alex as she grieves over Denny… it’s unforgettable and cemented its place as one of the most iconic TV deaths ever.
Tear count: Niagara Falls has nothin’ on us!
