Currently, the most pre-ordered game on the PlayStation Store isn’t a PlayStation exclusive – it’s a game from Xbox, specifically one published by Bethesda, which Xbox owns. It’s become more popular for pre-orders than games like LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, 007 First Light, Pragmata, and even Sony’s own Saros. While different versions of games can sometimes affect these rankings, the high demand for this Xbox game on the PS5 is clear.
As a PlayStation fan, I’ve been looking at what games people are most excited to pre-order right now. It’s worth mentioning that this ranking is only based on games you can actually pre-order on the PlayStation Store. Of course, everyone is hyped for titles like GTA 6 and The Elder Scrolls 6, and probably a ton of other upcoming games, but those aren’t available for pre-order just yet. Right now, Starfield is the big one people are pre-ordering, and there’s a lot of buzz around it!
Starfield Releasing Soon on PS5
This week, Bethesda and Xbox announced that Starfield will be available on PlayStation 5 starting April 7th, along with a significant new update. Pre-orders opened immediately, and PS5 players have been quickly reserving their copies.
We’re not sure how the PlayStation Store ranks its pre-order chart – whether it’s based on the total number of pre-orders or pre-orders within a specific timeframe like 24 hours or a week. Regardless, Starfield is currently number one, and has held that position since this morning.
Xbox doesn’t share sales numbers for its games anymore, especially with the popularity of Xbox Game Pass, which affects traditional sales figures. As of November 2024, about a year after its September 2023 launch, Starfield has been played by 15 million people. This makes the continued demand for the game on PS5, even three years later, understandable. Interestingly, Starfield still costs a full $70 on PS5, despite being over two years old – it hasn’t gotten cheaper like many other games do over time.
Without being available on Xbox Game Pass, Starfield is likely to sell better on PlayStation 5 than on Xbox Series X. This is because there are significantly more PS5s available for purchase than Xbox Series X consoles – at least twice as many.
