These two popular franchises have inspired countless fans and helped define modern sci-fi movies. But while they’re incredibly successful, they aren’t the only options. Many other great science fiction franchises have been created over the years, proving how diverse and appealing the genre can be to audiences worldwide.

Creating a thriving franchise is surprisingly difficult. We’ve seen many science fiction movies fail and damage their potential, and even some that diminished the legacy of earlier, successful films. Despite this, a few truly great sci-fi franchises have consistently delivered entertainment beyond the two most famous examples in the genre.
