Star Wars and Star Trek are often seen as the biggest names in science fiction, and they’ve definitely shaped the genre since the 1970s. These two popular franchises have inspired countless fans and helped define modern sci-fi movies. But while they’re incredibly successful, they aren’t the only options. Many other great science fiction franchises have been created over the years, proving how diverse and appealing the genre can be to audiences worldwide.
Creating a thriving franchise is surprisingly difficult. We’ve seen many science fiction movies fail and damage their potential, and even some that diminished the legacy of earlier, successful films. Despite this, a few truly great sci-fi franchises have consistently delivered entertainment beyond the two most famous examples in the genre.
7) Predator

The Predator movies, as a series, haven’t always been consistent in quality. But when they’re good, they’re truly great, successfully combining science fiction, action, and horror. The core idea – a deadly alien race that hunts humans for the thrill of the chase – has made Predator a beloved and unique part of the sci-fi genre.
6) Dune

While past attempts to bring Frank Herbert’s Dune to the screen have been hit or miss, most fans agree that Denis Villeneuve’s films are visually spectacular and capture some truly unforgettable moments. Dune was a revolutionary science fiction story when the book first came out, and these new adaptations do it justice with amazing effects and a talented cast. Even though it’s a relatively new franchise, Dune is already considered one of the best in the genre.
5) Planet of the Apes

The original Planet of the Apes film is famous for its shocking twist, but the series had trouble maintaining that level of quality afterward. Thankfully, the recent films, which tell the story of how apes rose to power and became the dominant species, have revitalized the franchise. Overall, Planet of the Apes is now considered one of the strongest sci-fi movie series ever made, boasting several truly entertaining installments that expand on its compelling story.
4) Avatar

When James Cameron’s Avatar came out, it was immediately praised as a groundbreaking science fiction film. The world of Pandora felt incredibly real, and the franchise continued to grow with new movies released in 2022 and 2025. Avatar remains unmatched in its ability to create a fully realized alien culture for the big screen, solidifying its place as a top sci-fi franchise in recent cinematic history.
3) Godzilla

It’s surprising how long the Godzilla movies have stayed popular. The franchise is incredibly successful, consistently delivering stories about giant monsters destroying cities. Even when the films are just pure action and special effects, they’re still fun to watch, making Godzilla one of the most well-loved and enduring sci-fi series in film history.
2) Alien

I truly believe the original Alien is a landmark film – it’s just a masterpiece! And it launched this whole amazing franchise. While not every Alien movie has reached the heights of the first one, the series as a whole is fantastic. The Xenomorph is seriously one of the scariest creatures ever put on film, and the whole franchise has kept sci-fi fans like me hooked for decades. It’s just consistently good entertainment!
1) Back to the Future

Widely regarded as a top movie trilogy, Back to the Future is a truly iconic science fiction story. These films are among the most beloved in cinema, offering a family-friendly adventure with time travel and thought-provoking paradoxes. For many, Back to the Future defines the sci-fi genre, delivering everything fans could hope for.
