That Dirty Black Bag is a fantastic, but often overlooked, eight-episode TV series. It’s a great example of the Spaghetti Western style, which is usually associated with Italian films from directors like Sergio Leone. These movies offered a grittier, more realistic take on the classic American Western.
Traditional Westerns aren’t as widely watched as they used to be, largely because modern Westerns tend to focus less on romanticized myths. However, every now and then, a true Western still appears, and The Dirty Black Bag, an Italian TV series, is a prime example.
That Dirty Black Bag Is A Great Spaghetti Western
The series That Dirty Black Bag is directed and written by Italian filmmaker Mauro Aragoni, despite being filmed in English. It centers around two characters: Red Bill (Douglas Booth), a feared bounty hunter known for a gruesome method of collecting trophies, and Arthur McCoy (Dominic Cooper), a sheriff who operates in a morally ambiguous space.
Red Bill and McCoy unexpectedly team up, leading them on a dark and brutal adventure where they confront painful secrets from their pasts. The series also stars Niv Sultan and Aidan Gillen. That Dirty Black Bag skillfully introduces flawed characters and gradually makes viewers sympathize with them as the story unfolds.
That Dirty Black Bag Deserved So Much More Attention
Despite an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the show That Dirty Black Bag hasn’t gained a large fanbase. This might be because it’s only accessible through Prime Video or an AMC+ subscription, preventing it from reaching the wider audience it deserves.
The fact that That Dirty Black Bag only lasted one season might discourage viewers from watching it. It’s a shame, because the show had compelling characters and a fascinating, dark Western setting with plenty of potential for future stories.
Why That Dirty Black Bag Is Still Worth Watching
Even though it doesn’t look like That Dirty Black Bag will get another season right now, it’s definitely a show worth checking out. It doesn’t try to be a historically accurate Western – it’s not like the classic Westerns from the 1950s and 60s, the Italian ‘Spaghetti Westerns’, or even more recent Westerns that took inspiration from them.

That Dirty Black Bag is unique in its approach. While it features shocking violence, it doesn’t rely on gore for its own sake. The show also balances tension with dark humor, offering moments of levity that perfectly offset the increasingly suspenseful storyline.
Dominic Cooper and Douglas Booth have fantastic on-screen chemistry. Even though their characters’ story ended in season one, the show could have used flashbacks in season two to further explore their relationship. There’s still a lot of potential in That Dirty Black Bag for a compelling continuation.
