The Batman Family is a well-known and highly effective team of superheroes dedicated to protecting Gotham City and the surrounding areas. They rely on their intelligence, incredible abilities, and a vast array of crime-fighting equipment, often inspiring fear in criminals. While Batman, Robin, and Batgirl are the most recognizable members, the group includes many other talented, though sometimes overlooked, heroes. Batwoman, specifically Kate Kane, is a prime example – despite often being forgotten, she’s a powerful defender of Gotham and is now featured in a new series, proving she’s stronger than ever.
Kate Kane is Batman’s cousin, but she forged her own path as a crime fighter. When she was twelve, Kate, her mother, and her twin sister, Beth, were kidnapped by a dangerous cult called the Religion of Crime – a group founded by followers of the villain Darkseid, intent on spreading evil. Kate escaped, but her mother died, and Beth was believed to be dead. However, Beth secretly survived and was raised by the Religion of Crime, eventually becoming their ruthless leader, Alice. Now, the new film Batwoman (2026) brings Kate, Alice, and the Religion of Crime back into the spotlight, with even higher stakes than before.
An Inglorious Return to Form

The story starts with Kate, who is struggling emotionally while in a care facility in Greece. Her doctor attempts to help her discuss her past, but Kate feels it’s all hopeless. Dr. Sidaris believes uncovering the trauma related to Beth’s apparent death is key, and Kate begins to recall the last time she saw her sister. It wasn’t a childhood memory, but a recent event: Alice tried to unleash a devastating weapon and kill countless people. Batwoman intervened, stopping Alice, but both women fell off a cliff. Beth seemingly died again, leaving Kate physically and emotionally broken.
Dr. Sidaris was trying to help Kate, but a dangerous cult known as the Religion of Crime was still watching her, and didn’t care about her well-being. Their informant inside the facility reported on Kate’s condition, and the cult leaders discussed trying to get to her that night. Although their main agent had died, they believed Kate could still help them achieve their goals. Some wanted to kidnap her right away, but Mr. Gores insisted she needed to willingly embrace their beliefs. However, their plans were interrupted when a bat-shaped spotlight suddenly shone into the room. Batwoman appeared on the windowsill, challenging them to come after her.
Batwoman Versus the Followers of King Omega

Kate seemed defeated, but she was actually working undercover as Batwoman. Thankfully, she’s at her best, because her enemies are more dangerous than ever. Batwoman has faced the Religion of Crime before, but they’ve become significantly more powerful, just like their leader. During the events of DC K.O., Earth was turned into a new version of Apokolips, and they clearly stole a lot of advanced technology during that time. Darkseid is stronger than ever, and since he nearly succeeded, his followers are even more committed to spreading his dangerous beliefs. When desperate, this cult will cause suffering for everyone.
The current storyline in DC comics builds on the previous one, continuing to explore the secrets behind Darkseid’s death and the nature of the universe. Now that the heroes understand Darkseid’s plan, they’re in a race against time to prevent his return and the destruction of everything. A mysterious group known as the Religion of Crime could be key to Darkseid’s comeback, and this storyline offers a unique opportunity to significantly raise Batwoman’s profile. While she’s traditionally been a mid-level character, this could be the story that makes her essential to DC’s future and finally gives her the recognition she deserves.
