Season 4 of Invincible has done a great job bringing storylines from the comics to life, and I especially appreciate how the showrunners handled a previously controversial scene. While the Invincible comics sometimes delve into difficult territory – like the relationships between Anissa and Mark, Eve’s use of her powers, and Mark and Amber – the show made a smart change to a particularly problematic scene involving Atom Eve, ultimately improving it and making it much more impactful.
The first episode of Invincible season 4 sees Mark Grayson returning as Invincible, facing new enemies while still healing from his fight with Conquest. Atom Eve is also recovering, learning to control her powers after pushing her limits during that same battle. This recovery has led to some unexpected developments in Mark and Eve’s relationship, though it’s a more hopeful direction than what happens in the original comic book.
The Conversation Between Eve’s Father & Mark Was Much More Controversial In The Comics
In the first episode of Invincible season 4, Mark visits Eve and meets her parents. While outside with Eve’s father, Mark is offered a cigar but declines. The conversation then takes a turn, as Eve’s father expresses his concerns about Eve’s dangerous life as a superhero. He also warns Mark about the risks of being with a Viltrumite, referencing the recent attacks by Nolan, Anissa, and Conquest. Mark doesn’t seem too bothered by this, and the topic isn’t revisited later in the episode.
This scene is inspired by a comic book moment, but takes some liberties with the dialogue. In the original comic, Mark goes outside with Eve’s father while visiting her home and is offered a cigar. Instead of discussing Mark’s superhero identity, the father launches into a disturbing conversation about Eve’s past relationships. He expresses gratitude that Mark is dating Eve, even though she previously dated Rex, and then delivers a lengthy and offensive speech about the importance of virginity and his disapproval of Eve’s romantic history. Here’s what he says:
Look, I just wanted to say thanks. I know my daughter isn’t exactly an angel – I even caught her with that boy, the one who passed away. She had him staying here for a while without us even knowing. Anyway, I appreciate you giving her a chance, especially knowing she’s… experienced. She never really understood how much virginity matters to some men. They like to feel like they’re the first, you know? Like they’re leading the way. It’s hard to do that if someone’s already been… well, explored. My wife, Betsy, was a virgin when we met, and you can just tell. They carry themselves differently, seem a little less sure of themselves. I found it attractive, honestly. I’m not sure I would have married Betsy if things had been different. I don’t like feeling like I’m not the first, or second, or… whatever number she was up to. It means a lot that you’re willing to look past all that. It shows you’re a good person, and I respect that. Of course, it’s not the end of the world if a woman’s had some experience, right? There are good and bad sides to everything, I guess.
Eve’s father’s words are deeply disturbing, especially considering he’s speaking about his own daughter. The scene aims to further establish him as a villain, but some viewers feel it’s excessively unsettling. It feels inappropriate and adds nothing, as he’s already clearly unlikeable. The show Invincible likely made the right decision by leaving this part out and instead focusing on the conflict between humans and superheroes.
Eve’s Father In The Invincible TV Series (Almost) Has A Point About Mark
Although Eve’s father was clearly wrong to disapprove in the comics, his discussion with Mark is more complicated. He’s consistently been critical of Eve’s relationships and her superhero life, and he’s understandably tough on those issues. However, it’s also easy to understand why dating a Viltrumite would be risky.
Despite knowing Mark is fundamentally a good person, most people don’t see him that way. This is because of the actions of others – Nolan’s betrayal and the countless deaths caused by Viltrumite battles involving Mark. From Eve’s father’s perspective, it’s understandable why he’d want Eve to avoid anyone connected to the Viltrum Empire. This creates a significant challenge for Mark, and could change the direction of his story in future seasons of Invincible.
