Sony is surprisingly offering refunds to PlayStation players for extra purchases made within a free-to-play game scheduled for 2026. While Sony generally has a firm, often inflexible, return policy, they’ve made an exception in this case due to issues with the game itself.
On January 26, 2026, Wildlight Entertainment launched Highguard, a free-to-play hero shooter. However, the game was unexpectedly shut down just under two months later, on March 12th, making it unplayable. While not the fastest game shutdown ever, it’s remarkably quick, particularly for a widely released title. Players who spent money on in-game items were understandably surprised by the sudden closure. Technically, the user agreement doesn’t require refunds, but offering them would be the right and strategic move. It could prevent legal issues in countries with stronger consumer protection laws than those in Japan or the United States.
Players on the PS5 subreddit, particularly those following the Highguard community, are reporting they’re unexpectedly receiving refunds from Sony for in-game purchases. These refunds are happening automatically, without players needing to request them. So far, this issue appears to be specific to the PS5 and seems to be affecting everyone on that platform.
This news follows reports that Sony is cancelling one of its PlayStation 5 games without offering refunds. Neither Sony nor the game’s developer, Wildlight Entertainment, have commented on the refund situation, but we will provide updates if that changes. Initially, some believed Wildlight Entertainment was issuing the refunds, but the fact that they are only for PS5 purchases indicates Sony is handling them. It’s likely Sony received a large number of refund requests, prompting this action, though this remains unconfirmed.
