As a huge TV fan, I’ve seen a lot of cliffhangers, but nothing quite compares to one from a CBS show back in 1980 – it had a whopping 83 million viewers wondering what would happen next! I think TV is actually better at building long-term mysteries than movies are, especially with shows on networks or cable that come back every year. There have been so many memorable cliffhangers in recent years that people are still talking about, and it’s easy to see why they stick with us.
TV shows often leave viewers on the edge of their seats with dramatic season finales. For example, HBO’s Game of Thrones had fans questioning Jon Snow’s fate after he was stabbed, while AMC’s The Walking Dead ended a season by making viewers wonder who Negan had killed. Lost famously used cliffhangers like the discovery of a mysterious hatch and a surprising flash-forward. More recently, The Good Place shocked audiences with a major realization by Eleanor, and Friends created a memorable moment when Ross accidentally called out the wrong name at his wedding.
Dallas Season 3 Ended With JR’s Shooting Cliffhanger On March 21, 1980

Though many TV cliffhangers are well-done and unforgettable, the most famous one actually occurred almost fifty years ago on the CBS show Dallas. The series, which aired from 1978 to 1991, centered on two wealthy and constantly warring families in Texas. A key focus of the show was the marriage of Bobby and Pam, who came from these rival families.
As the show Dallas went on, J.R., Bobby’s brother, became a major character. He was known as the villain and became the focus of a huge cliffhanger: the mystery of who shot him. The season 3 finale, “A House Divided,” ended with J.R. being shot at his office after a season of causing trouble for everyone. This made it hard to guess who was responsible. Fans unfortunately had to wait months to find out the answer, as it was the end of the season.
When Did Dallas Solve The Cliffhanger & Who Actually Shot JR?

The suspense of the cliffhanger became so immense that CBS used the question “Who Shot J.R.?” as a marketing campaign throughout the eight-month break between TV seasons. The phrase became incredibly popular and was featured on merchandise sold during the summer. The mystery went beyond television, becoming a major topic of conversation both in the U.S. and around the world.
The mystery of who shot J.R. on the TV show Dallas was solved in the fourth season with the episode “Who Done It.” It turned out Kristin Shepard, J.R.’s sister-in-law and former lover, was the shooter, acting after a heated fight. She tried to make it look like J.R.’s wife, Sue Ellen, was responsible, but the truth eventually came to light. An incredible 83 to 90 million people in the U.S. – around 76% of all viewers (according to the New York Times) – watched the episode to find out the answer. For a while, it was the most-watched TV episode in history, until the finale of MASH surpassed it in February 1983.
