I’m so excited everyone is loving Project Hail Mary! It’s already a huge success, and the reviews are fantastic. Honestly, people who read the book by Andy Weir have been obsessed with this story for years – it’s just so clever and the characters are amazing. Ryan Gosling is brilliant in the lead role, but you know what? There’s another character who completely stole my heart: Rocky. He’s the real star!
Rocky, the small, spider-like alien in Project Hail Mary, has quickly become a beloved character thanks to his funny personality and antics. Fans of Andy Weir’s original 2021 book have known how amusing Rocky is for a while, so it’s great to see others discovering his charm. However, the movie leaves out a lot of important details about Rocky that are only found in the book. These hidden facts range from funny quirks to heartbreaking revelations – and we’re about to share our favorites. Warning: Spoilers ahead!
10) How Rocky Measures Time

As a film and book fan, one of the coolest things about Project Hail Mary is the difference in how Rocky, the Eridian, and Ryland Grace, the human, experience time. The movie touches on this when they show each other their ‘clocks,’ but the book really dives into the details. It turns out one Eridian second is actually 2.366 Earth seconds long! That means Rocky perceives time way differently than we do, and it’s something we’ll explore more as the story unfolds. It’s a fascinating detail that adds so much to their interactions.
9) Eridian Science Is Lacking in Some Places

Rocky and the Eridians approach science in a way that’s completely unlike human methods. This difference is actually a strength in his partnership with Grace – they each specialize in different areas, creating a helpful overlap of knowledge. We see this in action when Rocky creates solid objects from the gas Xenon, and when Grace discovers the Eridians don’t understand fundamental physics concepts like relativity. Because of their unique scientific perspective, Rocky was surprised to reach Tau Ceti in just three years, while the Eridians had predicted a journey of over six and a half years.
Grace eventually explains to Rocky that time and space aren’t constant – they’re affected by speed and gravity. This means that while Rocky was away, more time passed for Erid than it did for him, which initially confuses Rocky. Meanwhile, Grace is amazed that a whole planet full of scientists built a spaceship to Tau Ceti based purely on guesswork.
8) How Sensitive Eridian Hearing Is

Throughout Project Hail Mary, it’s established that the Eridians, like Rocky, primarily perceive the world through sound since they don’t have eyes. The book explains in more detail than the movie just how incredibly sensitive their hearing is. It clarifies that for Eridians, hearing functions similarly to our sense of touch – they have receptors all over their bodies, essentially making their entire form a massive microphone.
7) The Size of Erid

The movie, like the book Project Hail Mary, doesn’t go into much detail about the planet Erid, even though the final scene takes place there. Erid is a massive world – over 8.5 times the size of Earth and twice as wide. It also orbits much closer to its sun than Earth does. This means a year on Erid is only 42 Earth days long, and a single day lasts just 5.1 hours. Because of its size and proximity to its sun, Erid has twice the gravity of Earth, a fact that isn’t fully obvious when watching Grace on the planet (although the Eridian scientists might have adjusted the gravity within his living space).
6) The Inside of Rocky’s Body

Let’s talk about Rocky, the alien from Project Hail Mary. The movie doesn’t really delve into the specifics of his biology, but the book? Wow. It turns out Rocky isn’t built like anything we know. He’s mostly made of oxidized minerals – very little actual flesh and blood. Imagine a skeleton like a honeycomb, and instead of blood, he’s got liquid mercury! His ‘circulatory system’ works by changing the temperature of that mercury. It’s so bizarre, Grace eventually just starts referring to Eridians as being ‘steam-powered,’ which honestly feels about right. And get this – Rocky reveals Eridians only have one opening for both eating and, well, laying eggs. It’s a completely alien design, and the book does a fantastic job of making it feel truly other-worldly.
5) Rocky Is Very, Very Hot

As we learn, the Eridians have liquid mercury flowing through their veins instead of blood. They control their body temperature to move around. Rocky even explains that they fight off illness by superheating their mercury and focusing it on the affected area, essentially killing the disease with heat. Considering this, it’s not explicitly shown in the movie, but Rocky is incredibly warm to the touch. Grace points out that just entering a room on the Hail Mary causes the temperature to noticeably rise.
4) How Much Rocky Weighs

It’s immediately apparent that Rocky is much larger than Grace when they first meet in Project Hail Mary, but the movie doesn’t convey just how heavy he is. Being made of rock with a dense interior, Rocky is quite cumbersome. The book reveals he weighs 168 kilograms (370 pounds) on Earth, but over 800 pounds on the planet Erid because of its stronger gravity. Grace is only able to lift Rocky and his spherical body inside the ship due to the lack of gravity, which leads her to ask about his weight. Rocky is surprised to learn that Grace’s mass is less than half of his own.
3) How Long Rocky’s Been Waiting

A particularly heartbreaking part of the story in Project Hail Mary is that Rocky’s entire crew perished during their journey to Tau Ceti, leaving him as the sole survivor of the ship, the “Blip-A.” The movie doesn’t show how long Rocky has been waiting at the star for rescue or assistance from Erid—a staggering 46 Earth years. This means Rocky has been waiting longer than Ryland Grace has been alive.
2) Why Rocky Needs to Watch/Be Watched While Sleeping

A humorous moment in both the book and movie Project Hail Mary is Rocky’s insistence that he both watch Grace while she sleeps and be watched by her in return. However, the movie doesn’t explain why. The book reveals that Eridians don’t sleep like humans do. When they sleep, their brains become completely inactive and their bodies are paralyzed. They need someone to watch over them to ensure their safety during this vulnerable state. This practice likely originated early in their species’ evolution and may no longer be necessary, but it’s become a tradition. Eridians also have variable sleep needs, resting anywhere from three to twelve hours, but only needing to sleep about every 86 hours.
1) How Old Rocky Is

As Rocky explains how long he’s been taking Blip-A, he also shares his age: 291 Earth years. This means he was born around the time of George Washington, the first U.S. president. Surprisingly, Rocky says this is still less than halfway through his expected lifespan, as Eridians typically live an average of 689 Earth years.
To help understand the timeline, Rocky explains that Erid has about 70 Earth years before the Astrophage problems become critical. The planet’s extremely hot atmosphere slows down the effects of its sun, giving them more time to prepare.
