2 Years Ago Today, a Cancelled Two-Season Sci-Fi Revival Finally Fulfilled Its Potential (But It Was Too Late)

For many gamers, the Halo series is iconic. It started in 2001 with a groundbreaking first-person shooter that essentially defined the genre. Halo: Combat Evolved offered smooth gameplay, a captivating story with surprising moments, and a memorable soundtrack. It remains considered one of the best games of all time, and future Halo games are constantly compared to the excitement surrounding its original release.

After a long and difficult development process, a Halo TV series finally premiered on Paramount+ in 2022. Pablo Schreiber played the iconic Master Chief in a show that intentionally diverged from the established Halo storyline, existing as its own separate timeline. From the start, it was clear this series would take a different approach, especially since the Master Chief – known as Spartan-117 or John – frequently removed his helmet. The show wasn’t interested in delivering the story fans anticipated.

The Halo TV Show Focused More on Characters Than Conflict

The original Halo: Combat Evolved started with a spaceship, the Pillar of Autumn, discovering a massive, ancient ring – a weapon capable of destroying all life. The game quickly escalated into a thrilling battle, with the hero, Spartan-117, fighting against an alien alliance called the Covenant who wanted to use this weapon. He also had to contend with a terrifying parasitic enemy called the Flood. This was an epic and exciting story, so fans naturally expected the Halo TV show to retell it. Surprisingly, the show took a completely different approach.

The first season of Halo mainly set the stage for the larger story, focusing on a rebellion against Earth’s control of the colonies. A key part of the season involved a search for the mysterious ‘Sacred Ring,’ and introduced Makee, a new character played by Charlie Murphy, who was captured and raised by the Covenant. Their relationship with Master Chief even became romantic, a surprising turn of events that continued into Season 2. Surprisingly, it wasn’t until the very last episode of Season 2 that Master Chief finally reached the Halo ring itself.

The Master Chief Only Got to the Sacred Ring at the End of Season 2

Today marks two years since the season finale of Halo Season 2, and fans generally agreed it delivered on what they’d been hoping for throughout the series. The episode featured a spectacular rescue by Master Chief, showcasing his incredible abilities, and teased the arrival of the Flood – plus, finally, the reveal of the Sacred Ring. While some storylines with the Insurrectionists weren’t very engaging, the finale felt like a turning point, bringing the show closer to the events of the original Combat Evolved game. After two seasons of building the story, it seemed Halo was finally ready to get to the heart of the action.

On July 18, 2024, Paramount cancelled the Halo series after two seasons. Unfortunately, the show never progressed to the core storyline, making the earlier episodes feel like a waste. While Netflix picked up Halo for a 2025 release, it didn’t attract enough viewers to warrant a revival like the show Manifest. Now, the Paramount+ Halo series is essentially just an introduction to a story that probably won’t continue on screen, which is disappointing considering its potential.
