Sony is getting more and more aggressive with shovelware on the PS Store.
As you might remember, the platform removed hundreds of games earlier this year from ThiGames, the company that created titles like the well-known game, The Jumping Pizza.
Now it’s axed hundreds more from two more publishers, with their entire catalogues nuked overnight.
Nostra Games, a studio based in Cyprus, created a much larger library of games than some of the more obviously low-quality developers, releasing nearly 700 titles on Sony’s platform, primarily simulation games.
The game Ghostly Whiskers recently made news when people claimed it was created using AI and was too similar to another game called Haunted Paws.
The studio said in a Discord post that they were unaware of why their games had been taken down.
We’re sorry to announce that our games have been removed from the PlayStation Store. We don’t know the specific reason, as PlayStation didn’t share it with us. We’re still planning to release new games on Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and Steam. This came as a surprise to us too – we had many more games planned, and some of you may have even seen previews. Unfortunately, that’s no longer possible. Thanks for your understanding, and we wish we had more information to share.
CGI Lab has also lost funding for its games. It’s unclear why, as the studio only released a small number of titles. However, those games – like Platform Zero and Veins of Darkness – were known for being very simple and low-quality horror experiences.
Sony is increasingly strict about the games it approves for sale on the PlayStation Store.
With so many new games being released daily – many now using AI-created artwork – it seems like these efforts aren’t making much of a difference.
Nostra Games aimed too high and ultimately failed. They released a huge number of games, all designed to be easily completed for PlayStation’s Platinum Trophy, and encouraged players to obtain multiple trophies by creating separate versions for different regions.
Their position on CGI Lab isn’t quite obvious, but it appears the company decided it no longer wanted to host content created using the platform.
It remains to be seen if they will keep enforcing these restrictions, or if they’ll try to prevent these works from being created in the first place.
Wouldn’t it be simpler to prevent these games from being released initially, instead of removing them after they’re already available?
