The new HBO series based on Harry Potter has quickly become a source of debate. The actors have been questioned about their collaboration with author J.K. Rowling, and some critics have accused the show of simply recreating the original stories without offering anything new. This project was always likely to spark discussion, but it’s often focused on things other than the show itself. Recently, one of the actors revealed he’s received death threats because of his involvement.
Paapa Essiedu shared in an interview with The Times that he received a death threat – someone told him to quit his job or they would kill him. While reflecting on past experiences with racism, Essiedu said that although he doesn’t believe the threat will be carried out, no one should face such abuse for simply doing their job. He pointed out that many professions involve real danger, and even playing a wizard in Harry Potter isn’t immune to this kind of emotional impact. Despite the abuse, Essiedu says it actually motivates him.
Honestly, taking on this role really hit me because it took me right back to being a kid. I used to daydream about flying around Hogwarts on a broomstick, and the thought that a kid like me could actually see themselves in that world? That’s huge. It’s what pushes me to ignore the negativity – even the really harsh stuff – and focus on delivering work I’m genuinely proud of. It’s a real motivator.
Paapa Essiedu Reveals Why He Accepted The New Snape Role
Taking on the role of Snape was always going to be difficult, especially after Alan Rickman’s iconic performance and untimely death. Rickman is deeply ingrained in Harry Potter history, and many fans pictured Snape exactly as he portrayed him, matching the book descriptions. The casting of Essiedu, a Black actor, sparked some criticism because the character was originally described as having pale skin, and because Essiedu’s interpretation of Snape will be quite different from Rickman’s. Personally, I think that’s a positive thing, considering how impossible it would be to live up to Rickman’s portrayal. It’s also interesting to remember that Tim Roth was actually the first choice for the role, which some fans seem to forget.
Despite the negativity surrounding the casting, The Times asked Essiedu why he accepted the role instead of pursuing other popular franchises, like Star Wars (implying that fandom isn’t always inclusive). His answer revealed a lot about his character and offered a hopeful perspective on his decision: he explained he took the role because the core message of Harry Potter – that love conquers hate and acceptance is important – resonated with him.
Essiedu explains he hasn’t contacted the police about the threats he’s received, believing that a short jail sentence for the perpetrator wouldn’t offer him any real comfort. He rightly points out that it’s awful he’s facing this abuse simply because his skin color doesn’t align with some people’s expectations for the character he plays. Hopefully, HBO is providing him with the support he needs.
