Lloyd’s Fate In Yellowstone, Explained

The show was a huge success and received a lot of praise, and its final season provides a good ending. However, some questions remain for dedicated fans. Notably, some of these lingering questions involve Lloyd, one of the ranch’s longtime and devoted cowboys.

I’ve really become a fan of Lloyd throughout this show, and it’s been awesome watching his character develop. He started as a smaller part, but he’s become totally central to the story. Lately, he’s been through the wringer – seriously, his life has been on the line a few times! Now, with the show ending soon, I’m totally on the edge of my seat wondering what’s going to happen to him. There are so many possibilities, and I’m dying to know how his story will ultimately unfold.

What is Lloyd’s Story in Yellowstone?

Lloyd has worked as a ranch hand at Yellowstone for many years, first appearing in Season 1. He, like the other cowboys, carries the Yellowstone brand, which signifies a criminal history he’s exchanged for loyalty and protection from the Dutton family. For the first two seasons of the show, he had a minor role.

Lloyd didn’t have a large role in the story or many lines, but his few scenes clearly demonstrated his dedication and loyalty. Viewers also enjoyed the genuine friendship between him and Rip, and the close, father-son relationship he shared with another ranch hand, Jimmy.

Season 4 of Yellowstone delved deeper into Lloyd’s character, and his long-standing feud with fellow ranch hand Walker escalated dramatically. The situation worsened when Laramie ended her relationship with Lloyd to pursue a romance with Walker. This rivalry ultimately exploded into a violent confrontation where Lloyd destroyed Walker’s guitar and even stabbed him (though narrowly missing his heart) after Walker provoked a fight.

After a fight broke out in the bunkhouse – against the established rules – John and Rip made the two men involved box until they were completely exhausted. Although Lloyd won the fight, Rip believed Lloyd still needed to be punished for his actions. He ambushed Lloyd and beat him badly. Surprisingly, this severe beating didn’t damage their friendship, and Lloyd and Walker eventually agreed to resolve their issues with each other.

What Happens to Lloyd at the End of Yellowstone?

When John Dutton unexpectedly passes away, the future of the Dutton ranch is thrown into chaos. His family is faced with enormous inheritance taxes and is forced to sell the Yellowstone Ranch back to Thomas Rainwater and the Broken Rock Reservation. While difficult, they realize this is the best way to protect the land from being taken over by developers. Ultimately, it’s a sad ending, as the Duttons and everyone who works on the ranch must leave their home for good.

After the ranch closed, most of the cowboys, including Lloyd, moved on to start new lives elsewhere. But Lloyd is different. After dedicating so many years to the Dutton family and the Yellowstone, he simply can’t imagine working as a cowboy for anyone else.

Even though Beth and Rip offered him a job at their new ranch, Lloyd chooses to fully retire from being a cowboy. The show doesn’t explain what happens to him in detail, only saying he intends to find work in a different profession, likely still in Montana. This leaves the door open for Lloyd to potentially return in future episodes, but for now, he’s moved on to a new chapter, bringing a satisfying conclusion to the story of one of the Dutton family’s most dedicated cowboys.

Will Lloyd Appear in an Upcoming Yellowstone Spinoff?

I’m still holding out hope that Lloyd will be back, even after everything that happened on Yellowstone. It’s comforting to know there are so many potential spinoffs planned after the fifth season, and any one of them could give us another glimpse of that amazing cowboy. I really want to see what happens with him!

Lloyd is most likely to reappear in the upcoming The Dutton Ranch spinoff. Expected to debut in late 2026, the show will focus on the Duttons as they establish a new ranch in Montana. Given his strong bond with Rip, it would be natural for Lloyd to visit the new ranch, even though he declined a job offer there at the end of Yellowstone.

It’s possible Lloyd might reappear in the show. The series is currently focusing on Kayce as he tries to cope with his wife’s death by rejoining the U.S. Marshals. Although Lloyd may not want to be involved with the Marshals, he could potentially become connected to one of Kayce’s future cases.

Many fans are hoping Lloyd will return in one of the new Yellowstone spinoffs. His character has a lot of potential, and there are plenty of stories that could be told with him.
