Amanda Peet is sharing how she navigated a series of family health crises.
Actress Diane Keaton recently revealed she has breast cancer. This diagnosis came while she was also dealing with the difficult experience of her parents being in hospice care, leading her to prioritize her health and well-being.
She explained in a recent essay for The New Yorker that doctors had repeatedly described her breasts as ‘dense’ and ‘busy.’ This wasn’t meant as a positive thing; rather, it was a caution that she needed more frequent monitoring. As a result, she’d been seeing a breast surgeon for checkups every six months.
Following a standard check-up in late August, an ultrasound showed something unusual, so the 54-year-old patient had a biopsy. The biopsy found a small tumor, but doctors ordered an MRI to understand how far it had spread.
While Amanda was figuring out her next steps in dealing with her health issues, things became even harder when her parents, who were divorced and lived far apart, started to get sick. Sadly, her father passed away unexpectedly.
Momās illness began in June, but Dad had only been sick for a week, so we didnāt think heād be the one to go first, she explained. I flew to New York, but I arrived after he had passed away. I was able to see him one last time before they took him from his apartment.

After returning to Los Angeles, the actress from Your Friends and Neighbors ā who has three children, Frances (19), Molly (15), and Henry (11), with her husband David Benioff ā received good news about her illness. Doctors determined it was hormone-receptor-positive and HER2-negative, which briefly made her feel better than she had before her diagnosis. A later MRI showed another mass in the same breast, but it turned out to be non-cancerous and didn’t require chemotherapy or a double mastectomy.
Okay, so the essay ended with this amazing part. Amanda was saying goodbye to her mom, who was so brave fighting Parkinson’s, and even at the very end, she was the one comforting us ā I mean, Amanda! It was just⦠heartbreakingly beautiful. It really stuck with me, honestly. She made it sound so peaceful, even though it must have been incredibly difficult.
Amanda remembered that the morphine wasn’t working quickly enough, and her mother was lying in bed, quietly crying and looking up at the ceiling. Amanda climbed onto the bed to be closer to her face. As soon as they made eye contact, her mother calmed down, and they continued to look at each other for what seemed like a long time.
