SNL UK first reviews are in after premiere episode with Tina Fey – here’s the verdict

As a huge fan of comedy and sketch shows, I was really excited to finally see Saturday Night Live UK hit our screens, and honestly, it was a really good surprise! I went in with cautious optimism, but it genuinely delivered.

Before the first episode aired, Sky increased the show’s order from six to eight episodes, signaling confidence that Saturday Night Live would appeal to viewers in the UK. So far, that bet seems to be working – at least for certain people.

The first episode, hosted by comedy icon Tina Fey and featuring musical performance by Wet Leg, received a mixed reaction from critics. The Guardian gave it three stars, saying it wasn’t terrible, but it also wasn’t outstanding.

The first episode aired live from London and featured a brand new cast: Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring, George Fouracres, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Jack Shep, Emma Sidi, and Paddy Young.

The Independent rated the show three stars, pointing out that it’s too early to judge based on just the first episode. The cast needs time to gel, and social media buzz will likely determine which sketches become popular and which ones don’t make the cut.

The first episode of SNL UK shows they’re not afraid to be bold and even a little shocking. While using a well-known American show as a starting point feels somewhat predictable, there are hints of originality that suggest they could bring something new to the table.

Next week’s episode of the show will be 75 minutes long and feature Jamie Dornan as the host, with Wolf Alice performing as the musical guest.

Saturday Night Live UK continues on to Sky One and NOW on Saturday 29 March at 10pm.
