Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions recently. While many were disappointed to learn that Hulu had cancelled the planned Buffy revival – which would have brought Sarah Michelle Gellar back to the role after over 20 years – there was also exciting news. Nathan Fillion confirmed, after hinting for a while, that Firefly will return for a second season as an animated series, 24 years after its original cancellation after only one season.
While there’s no official network commitment yet, a revival of Firefly is looking promising, especially with the original cast enthusiastic about returning. It’s a bit like the situation with Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale last week – things can change quickly and aren’t certain. However, Firefly seems to be in a stronger position than Buffy was, suggesting it may have a smoother path to getting made.
Firefly Season 2 Shouldn’t Suffer Creative Differences Like Buffy

Nathan Fillion is reuniting with the cast of Firefly for a new project, backed by 20th Century Animation. Tara Butters (Agent Carter, Dollhouse) and Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, The Flash) will lead the show as showrunners, and they already have a script and initial concept artwork developed.
Most importantly, the new project feels like a natural extension of the original Firefly series, taking place between the show’s finale and the movie Serenity. The pitch to potential buyers presents a cohesive and well-defined plan from the creators. While any network will likely have its own ideas and that could create challenges, this project is starting from a much more solid foundation than the Buffy reboot was.
It appears there were multiple factors contributing to the cancellation of the Buffy reboot, and a lot of public disagreement about who was responsible. The main issue seems to be a clash of visions. Sarah Michelle Gellar returned because she was drawn to Chloé Zhao’s idea – a fresh take focusing on a new generation. However, Hulu reportedly wanted a continuation that relied more on Gellar’s involvement and played up nostalgia, similar to a traditional legacy sequel.
This isn’t the whole story, particularly since Gellar mentioned one executive who created difficulties, but it does show how well-positioned Firefly is. The new show is specifically built to continue the original, and being animated gives it freedom in how it does so. The goal is to recreate the feel of the original series, which should lead to a more unified creative vision if it’s revived.
Firefly’s Legacy Is Very Different To Buffy’s

Reviving Firefly carries a different kind of risk than bringing back Buffy. While I enjoy both shows, they have different histories. Buffy is considered one of the most important and impactful TV series of the past three decades. Firefly, though excellent, is remembered as a show that was cut short before it could fully develop. Buffy already had a satisfying conclusion, but Firefly—even with the Serenity movie—still feels like it deserves a proper ending. The Firefly characters have unexplored potential, whereas Buffy’s story feels complete.
The reasons for the show’s cancellation weren’t likely about creative choices. It’s obvious from interviews that Sarah Michelle Gellar deeply cares about Buffy and wanted to preserve its reputation. However, since everyone couldn’t agree on the best way to bring the show back, even though I’d love to see it return with her involvement, it might be better that it doesn’t happen.
Even if the second season of Firefly isn’t as good as the first, I believe it’s still worthwhile. The original show was cancelled prematurely and poorly by Fox, which means a successful revival might be more achievable.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly are both available to stream on Hulu.
