Who isn’t returning for Ted Lasso season 4? Phil Dunster and more absent from announced regular cast

Production for the fourth season of Ted Lasso has begun, along with unveiling a sneak peek image, and confirming several actors who will be reprising their roles.

This group also features several main cast members from the program, including Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Jeremy Swift, Brett Goldstein, and Brendan Hunt.

In addition to the current lineup, several new stars such as Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, and Faye Marsay have been brought in for this upcoming season.

Despite many beloved actors establishing themselves as regular faces across the first three seasons of the Apple TV+ comedy series, some noticeable absences were spotted by fans. The question then arises: Who won’t be returning, and is there a chance they might join the cast at a future point?

Read on for everything we know about the Ted Lasso stars not currently set to return.

Who isn’t returning for Ted Lasso season 4?

To date, I haven’t received confirmation that these primary characters will be back for Ted Lasso season 4: [list of characters]

  • Phil Dunster as Jamie Tartt
  • Nick Mohammed as Nathan ‘Nate’ Shelley
  • Sarah Niles as Dr Sharon M Fieldstone
  • Anthony Head as Rupert Mannion
  • Toheeb Jimoh as Samuel ‘Sam’ Obisanya
  • Cristo Fernández as Dani Rojas
  • Kola Bokinni as Isaac McAdoo
  • Billy Harris as Colin Hughes
  • James Lance as Trent Crimm
  • Gus Turner as Henry

In this scenario, we can confidently say that Gus Henry will not return in his role as Ted’s son Henry, as his part has been reassigned to Grant Feely (Obi-Wan Kenobi). The change was reportedly made due to the new storyline requiring an actor with football-playing abilities, a skillset that Grant Feely brings to the table.

One possibility among the other cast members may yet rejoin the series, potentially taking on a principal role again or making brief appearances as a guest star.

It’s quite possible that we will see Nick Mohammed again on the show, as he portrays the character Nate Shelley. Nick himself has often hinted at a possible comeback and seems eager about rejoining the cast.

Previously, it was disclosed that some tour dates were shifted due to filming commitments, which strongly hinted at filming for Ted Lasso season 4. More recently, he told Collider that he’s unsure about Nate’s screen time in season 4, but he’s confident we’ll catch glimpses of him.

Considering that season 4 concluded with Nate rejoining the group, it would undoubtedly be unexpected if he played no role whatsoever moving forward.

Some other actors who have shown interest in reprising their roles are James Lance (Trent Crimm) and Sharon Fieldstone, as mentioned during separate interviews with TalkSport and Hollywood Elite respectively. At this point, neither return has been officially confirmed, but their characters could potentially play significant roles in the upcoming season, much like Anthony Head’s character Ruper Mannion.

In the third season, James Lance portrays Trent Crimm. As for the team members, considering that season 4 is expected to emphasize the women’s squad, there might be significantly fewer appearances by the men’s team, or possibly none at all.

It seems there might be another reason why Jamie Tartt’s actor, Phil Dunster, is not on the current cast list. Contrary to previous speculations about scheduling issues, he has recently shared with the Always Be Comedy podcast that this isn’t the cause of his potential absence.

It has been officially approved to create another series for season 4. The production team has confirmed that season 4 will take place. A commission has been given to write the fourth season, but whether or not it will become a show is yet to be determined. I don’t have any specific information regarding my involvement in it. Some of the cast members have signed on for another season.

Indeed, it seems like the season 4 is going to materialize. The writers plan to begin working on it next year. As for additional details, I’m afraid I don’t have any more information at this time.

He went on to say: “I’m currently working on a comedy project with Bill Lawrence, known for co-creating Ted. My upcoming venture is this comedy, which will air on HBO. I’m not among those who have signed for another season or extension.

However, let me clarify that while I express love and acceptance for moving forward and accepting changes, it’s essential to note that my inability to participate wasn’t due to any prior commitments. Contrary to some assumptions at the time, other engagements were not the cause.

As a devoted fan, I can confidently admit that if Jason gave me the command to leap, I’d be the first one to respond with an eager “How high?” However, it’s hard to predict the trajectory of this show. Who knows where the story might lead us? Yet, in a realm where such scenarios unfold, I believe it exists. Regarding the series, I’m unsure about its future direction, but one thing is certain – many beloved characters will remain part of the cast. As the youth often express these days, we’ll just have to ‘keep moving’.

As a film enthusiast, I find it plausible that the change in narrative perspective could be the reason behind the absence of some key actors from the cast list. Toheeb Jimoh (Sam Obisanya), Cristo Fernández (Dani Rojas), Kola Bokinni (Isaac McAdoo), and Billy Harris (Colin Hughes) seem to be noticeably missing.

If the group responsible for the show decides to invite them as guests, it appears that several of them would be willing to return.

Back in January, Fernández expressed his hope to ScreenRant: “I’m hoping for more Ted Lasso episodes. I’m also wishing for more Dani Rojas.

In September 2024, Bokinni expressed to The Big Issue that no matter the outcome, he would always stand by the team who supported him, as they had been there for him.

It’s been said by Deadline that sources have hinted at discussions about potential cameos featuring actors such as Dunster and Fernándex, but no confirmations have been made so far.
