54 Years Ago Today, This Bruce Lee Movie Broke a Record – and Jackie Chan Replaced Him in the Sequel

Bruce Lee became a major figure in film history despite his tragically short life, passing away at only 32 years old. He was an incredibly popular action star worldwide, and constantly challenged himself as both a martial artist and creative thinker. Sadly, we only got to see him lead four complete films – five if you include the unfinished Game of Death, where he’d only filmed the ending scenes. He began his career in Hong Kong as a baby and later gained recognition in Hollywood playing Kato in The Green Hornet.

The show didn’t last long – only 26 episodes – but afterward, he started directing action scenes in big movies, including The Wrecking Crew starring Dean Martin (you might recognize it as the film Sharon Tate watches in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood). He directed a few more films before returning to Hong Kong to star in his first leading role, The Big Boss. That success led to Fist of Fury, which came out 54 years ago today and quickly became a huge hit.

What Record Did Fist of Fury Set?

Let me tell you, Fist of Fury was a massive hit – it became the highest-grossing Hong Kong film of its time! And that’s saying something, because it actually took the crown from Bruce Lee’s The Big Boss. It’s incredible to think that with just his first leading role, Lee was breaking records, then smashed them again with Fist of Fury. He kept the momentum going with The Way of the Dragon – who could forget that fight with Chuck Norris? – and then blew it all away with Enter the Dragon, which was his most popular and highest-grossing film. Each movie just kept building on the last, cementing Lee’s status as a true icon.

When The Big Boss was released in Hong Kong, it earned HK$3.2 million, which translates to about 1.2 million tickets sold in a city of four million people. The following year, Fist of Fury surpassed The Big Boss, earning an additional HK$1.2 million. It also performed exceptionally well internationally, topping box office charts in the U.S., South Korea, the United Kingdom, and France. By the end of its run, Lee’s second leading role film had made 1,000 times its original $100,000 production budget.

As a movie fan, it’s incredible to look back at Bruce Lee’s impact! Take The Big Boss, for example – made on a tiny $100,000 budget, it somehow earned $50 million! That really shows how quickly he took the world by storm. But 1972 wasn’t just about Fist of Fury; later that year, The Way of the Dragon pulled in $130 million on a $130,000 investment – another massive return! Then there’s Enter the Dragon, which came out just days after his passing. It made a staggering $400 million from an $850,000 budget. And even now, Enter the Dragon is still considered one of the most successful movies ever made when you adjust for inflation. It’s a legacy, honestly.

A sequel to Fist of Fury called New Fist of Fury was released in 1976, revisiting similar themes as the original. While it wasn’t as commercially successful, the film marked a turning point by launching Jackie Chan into leading-man stardom – it was his first time headlining a movie.
