Comic book artist Sam Kieth, known for creating The Maxx and his work on The Sandman, has died at the age of 63. His friend, Scott Dunbier, announced that Kieth passed away on Sunday, March 15th, after a long struggle with Lewy Body Dementia. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Kieth’s name to the Hero Initiative, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, or the Lewy Body Dementia Association. Our condolences go out to his wife, Kathy, and the rest of his family.
Kieth played a key role in launching the hugely popular comic series Sandman, co-creating it with Neil Gaiman and drawing the first five issues. Sandman became a classic, eventually adapted into a television show on Netflix, and Kieth’s artwork was instrumental in shaping the initial stories of the character Dream.
Sam Kieth Delivered One Of The Wildest Original Characters In The Maxx

In 1993, Kieth launched The Maxx, a comic featuring one of the most unique and imaginative original characters in the medium. The Maxx’s design—instantly recognizable with its purple and yellow color scheme, large teeth, and spiky hands—made a powerful first impression.
Okay, so the story is seriously mind-bending! It follows this guy, Maxx, who’s caught between two realities. One is this crazy, dreamlike place called The Outback, where he’s like a superhero protecting this queen, the Leopard Queen. But then, back in the real world, he’s actually homeless and trying to protect the real Julie Winters, who’s connected to the Leopard Queen somehow. It’s a really cool concept!
The series caused quite a stir in both the real world and the fictional one. Over time, The Maxx even teamed up with Batman in a special crossover event, with the Joker bringing Batman into The Outback. Later on, the comic gained a popular animated series on MTV, and IDW Publishing re-released the original comics for a new audience.
Kieth has worked on a wide variety of books, including popular titles like Sandman and The Maxx, as well as Zero Girl, Wolverine/Hulk, Batman: Secrets, Judge Dredd, 30 Days of Night, Eleanor & The Egret, The Hollows, Batman/Lobo: Deadly Serious, Lobo: Highway to Hell, Mars Attacks: First Born, and Batman: Through The Looking Glass, among others.
Our thoughts are with Kieth’s family and friends.
