Ben Keaton, Father Ted and Emmerdale actor, dies aged 69

Ben Keaton, known for playing a role in the popular comedy series Father Ted and also appearing in Emmerdale, has passed away at the age of 69.

Irish actor Frank Kelly first became famous for playing Father Austin Purcell on the popular Channel 4 show, Father Ted. He later appeared in several other television dramas and comedies, such as Emmerdale and Casualty.

He died unexpectedly last Friday at Lincoln County Hospital, and his family and friends were shocked by his sudden passing.

I was so saddened to hear about Ben’s passing. His obituary mentioned he’ll be deeply missed by so many people who loved him – his ex-wife, Polly, and his kids, Waldo and Daisy. It also listed his siblings, Des, Thom, and Jeanette, which just shows how much family meant to him. It’s clear he touched a lot of lives, and he’ll be fondly remembered by all of them.

A talented actor known from television shows like Father Ted, Emmerdale, Casualty, and The Bill, as well as films such as East is East, he also graced the stage in productions like Animal Crackers, Harvey, Cyrano de Bergerac, and Hay Fever. He was a founding member of the improv group South Of The River and helped direct the Creative Academy. Details about his funeral will be announced at a later date.

Polly, Ben Keaton’s ex-wife, shared the sad news on Facebook that Ben passed away last night. She said it was unexpected and that the family is devastated.

We’d been apart for years, but we shared so much of our lives together – we both loved to make each other laugh until we cried, and we certainly had our share of arguments too. He was a wonderful father to Waldo and Daisy, and an incredibly talented performer – the best Groucho and Cyrano I’ve ever seen.

I recently reflected on the incredible career of this Dublin-born actor, and what a journey it was! He really honed his craft on stage before seamlessly transitioning into comedy, TV, and film. While he first popped up on screen in ‘The Bill’ back in 1989, it was his hilarious portrayal of Father Austin Purcell in ‘Father Ted’ in 1995 that truly put him on the map and launched his career into the stratosphere. That role was a game-changer, and it’s what I think most people will always remember him for.

In 2019, TopMob ranked Father Ted as the second-best British sitcom ever, with only Fawlty Towers considered better.

Throughout his career, Keaton won several awards, including the 1986 Perrier Comedy Award and two Best Actor awards from the Manchester Evening News. He was also nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for his one-man show, Intimate Memoirs of an Irish Taxidermist.
