Netflix has added a highly-rated animated spinoff movie to its growing collection this month. Throughout March, the streaming service has been expanding its animated offerings with popular titles like The Lego Movie, Trolls, and the latest season (Season 13) of Gabby’s Dollhouse. This new addition is one of the last animated releases Netflix is adding for March.
Fans can now watch Minions: The Rise of Gru on Netflix, as the 2022 film became available on the platform on March 23rd. This movie, the sixth in the Despicable Me series and the second Minions spin-off, tells the story of an 11-year-old Gru in the 1970s and his hilarious attempts to become a supervillain with his Minions. The film was a huge success, bringing the franchise’s total earnings to over $940 million worldwide and solidifying its place as the highest-grossing animated franchise of all time. It was also better received than the first Minions movie, earning a 69% approval rating from critics and an impressive 89% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Minions: The Rise of Gru Perfectly Expands the Despicable Me Franchise
After the mixed reviews of the first Minions movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru successfully breathed new life into the Despicable Me series. The film reconnected with the heart of the original movie by showing Gru’s childhood, his path to becoming a villain, and how his relationship with the Minions began. It also cleverly linked the spin-off films back to the original stories, while introducing fresh characters like Wild Knuckles and the Vicious 6 to build out the world of supervillains, alongside familiar faces like Dr. Nefario. Plus, the movie was genuinely funny, delivering classic slapstick comedy reminiscent of Looney Tunes and featuring imaginative action scenes.
With its blend of silly humor, lovable characters, and heartwarming moments, The Rise of Gru reminded everyone why the Despicable Me series is so popular – and paved the way for successful spin-off movies. After Despicable Me 4 arrives in 2024, a new Minions adventure, Minions & Monsters, will be released on July 1, 2026. This third Minions film takes place in 1920s Hollywood, where the Minions accidentally unleash monsters while trying their hand at movie stardom, and must then become heroes to save the world.
