Hollywood hasn’t always had success turning video games into movies, but recently, some adaptations have really stood out. TV has become a particularly good fit for these stories, which are often long and complex, as seen with shows like The Last of Us and Fallout. However, the big screen has also seen some wins. Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog movies, surprisingly, have become a major success over the last few years. While The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned the most money of any game adaptation, Sonic has still had a very impressive run.
The fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie is coming out next year, and that means Paramount will have released four live-action Sonic films and a TV series in just seven years – a remarkably high rate for modern filmmaking. With the recent merger with Skydance, Sonic is proving to be a very dependable source of income for the studio, especially considering the franchise almost didn’t get off the ground.
How Sonic the Hedgehog Became a Major Success for Paramount

It’s easy to imagine a scenario where the Sonic movies never took off. When the first teaser trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was released in April 2019, the initial design of Sonic – quickly dubbed “Ugly Sonic” – received a lot of negative feedback. Paramount listened to the criticism and delayed the film to allow the visual effects team time to redesign Sonic, making him look more like his video game version. This extra effort proved worthwhile: Sonic the Hedgehog earned almost $320 million globally and was one of the last major box office successes before the pandemic shut down theaters.
Redoing Sonic’s design was certainly critical, but it would be disingenuous to say that was the only reason why the film became a success. The movie could have featured the most game-accurate Sonic design of all time from the beginning, but it wouldn’t have mattered if the film itself wasn’t good. The first Sonic earned a 64% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the sequels have each been an improvement. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is far and away the best-received of the bunch with an 85% score. The Sonic movies don’t reinvent the wheel narratively, but they do an excellent job of capturing a fun spirit and tone, which makes them enjoyable to watch. The emphasis on humor, heart, and action is a winning combination, and casting Jim Carrey as villain Dr. Robotnik proved to be a master stroke, giving the movies a source of loony energy that made them stand out.
Paramount has made smart business decisions with the Sonic movies. While the budgets for each film have gone up, they remain relatively low compared to most big-budget blockbusters. By controlling costs, Paramount maximizes its profits, making the Sonic films even more successful than their box office numbers alone would suggest. Here’s a look at how the films’ earnings compare to their production costs:
| Film | Budget | Worldwide Box Office |
| Sonic the Hedgehog | $85-90 million | $319.7 million |
| Sonic the Hedgehog 2 | $90-110 million | $405.4 million |
| Sonic the Hedgehog 3 | $122 million | $492.1 million |
Budget details for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 aren’t available yet, but it’s likely to be similar to the previous film. Based on past movies in the series, it might be a little more expensive than Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but probably not significantly so. Paramount has found a successful formula with these films and doesn’t need to spend a huge amount of money – over $200 million – on each one. Keeping costs down protects their profits, which is a priority for the studio. Director Jeff Fowler has proven he can make these movies efficiently, and that approach should continue to be key to the franchise’s success.
The Sonic the Hedgehog Films Keep Finding Ways to Excite Fans

The Sonic movies have consistently performed better at the box office with each new release, demonstrating the franchise’s success in keeping longtime fans happy and attracting new audiences. They’ve achieved this by consistently offering fresh and exciting content. While the first movie started modestly, the sequels have broadened the story and introduced many beloved characters, helping the franchise grow significantly.
The Sonic the Hedgehog movies have been steadily expanding their world. The second film introduced Tails and Knuckles, giving Sonic some new friends to interact with. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 really stood out thanks to Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of Shadow, which surprisingly connected with audiences by exploring the character’s sad past. Now, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is adding even more characters – Amy Rose and Metal Sonic – hinting at a possible time-travel plot. The filmmakers have done a great job with this approach. The series feels like a natural build-up, carefully adding elements for what promises to be a huge and exciting finale.
As a big fan of these Sonic movies, I really appreciate how each sequel manages to bring something new to the table. It’s crucial, especially with how quickly they’re being made! It prevents things from getting stale and keeps me excited for each new installment. The filmmakers haven’t fallen into a rut, and they’re clearly listening to fans. They’re taking the time to introduce elements of Sonic lore we’ve been hoping to see on the big screen, making each film feel like a real event. We saw it with Shadow in the marketing for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and I wouldn’t be shocked if the trailers for Sonic 4 give us a big look at Amy Rose and hint at her relationship with Sonic. It’s a smart way to keep the momentum going!
It will be fascinating to watch where Paramount takes the Sonic the Hedgehog series next. While sequels usually get bigger and bolder, it’s hard to keep raising the stakes – especially after introducing something like time travel. A smaller-scale Sonic the Hedgehog 5 might disappoint fans, given how ambitious the previous films have been. However, there are still many characters from the Sonic universe who haven’t appeared on the big screen yet, so director Jeff Fowler might still have a few tricks up his sleeve to keep fans wanting more.
