Before Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, Avatar Fans Can Stream the Adaptation That Got It All Wrong on Peacock

It’s a fantastic – and somewhat overwhelming – time to be an Avatar: The Last Airbender fan! Seventeen years after the original animated series ended, the world of Avatar is back with new projects. Fans are eagerly awaiting the Avatar: Seven Havens series and the upcoming movie, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, which unexpectedly appeared online months before its official October release on Paramount+. While we still have a few months to wait for the legal streaming release of the movie (which takes place over a decade after the original series), those with Peacock subscriptions can already watch another live-action adaptation – though it didn’t quite hit the mark.

M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender is widely considered a terrible movie adaptation, and many believe that reputation is well-deserved. Originally planned as the first of three films, it only received a 5% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 30% audience score. Now streaming on Peacock since May 1st, the movie covers the storyline of the first season of the original series, following Aang, the last airbender and the Avatar, as he teams up with Katara and Sokka to oppose the Fire Nation.

The Last Airbender Failed Team Avatar’s Story

It’s fair to say the negative reviews for The Last Airbender are justified. The movie falls short in many areas, especially when it comes to the characters of Team Avatar. Aang, Katara, and Sokka simply didn’t feel like the same people we loved in the animated series. Aang lost his fun-loving personality and became a typical, unoriginal hero, Katara lacked the strong emotions that defined her, and Sokka’s humor was completely missing, leaving him bland and lifeless. The film also failed to show the genuine connection and developing friendship between the characters, making their interactions feel forced and unnatural, which really hurt the heart of the original story.

The movie suffered not only from weak character portrayals but also from a severely rushed plot. Trying to fit the entire first season—originally 20 episodes—into just over an hour and a half left no room to develop the characters, build a believable world, or create any emotional impact. The bending, a key element of the story, felt uninspired, and the action sequences didn’t capture the energy, grace, or imagination of the original animated series. Viewers also criticized the casting choices, which replaced the diverse, Asian-influenced cast of the show with mostly white actors, and the incorrect pronunciation of important character names.

What’s New on Peacock?

Peacock has a lot of exciting content planned for May! So far this month, they’ve added popular movies like The Day After Tomorrow, Dirty Dancing, Galaxy Quest, The Martian, and Pulp Fiction, with more on the way. Keep an eye out for Arthur the King arriving May 11th, Wicked on May 21st, and a collection of eight films by Quentin Tarantino on May 22nd.
