As a huge film and comic book fan, I can confidently say Batman is in a league of his own when it comes to popularity – it’s not even a close competition! He consistently drives comic sales, packs theaters, and flies off the shelves in terms of merchandise. It’s gotten to the point where DC seems to release endless variations of the character, and they’re often bestsellers. The thing is, Batman operates in a really gritty, dangerous world, constantly facing off against some truly terrifying villains. Because of that, DC often explores even darker, more complex versions of him, letting us see different sides of what makes the character so compelling.
For decades, DC Comics has believed that having many different versions of Batman is a good thing, and they’ve created countless interpretations of the character. Some of these alternate Batmen are incredibly grim and intense, even darker than Superman. These seven particularly shadowy versions take the Batman mythos to its most disturbing extremes.
7) The Devil Batman

Grant Morrison’s Batman run was truly something special, and it gave us a Batman unlike any we’d seen before – incredibly dark and disturbed. One of the most fascinating things Morrison did was introduce the idea of the ‘Devil Batman,’ one of three attempts by the Gotham PD to create their own Batman. This guy, Michael Lang, completely lost it, convinced he was the literal Devil. He disappeared, but resurfaced in a story set in a future timeline – specifically, Batman #666, where Damian Wayne had taken over the mantle. Let me tell you, he was terrifying. Lang wanted to turn Gotham City into a literal hellscape, and he proved to be the biggest, most frightening villain that future Batman, Damian, ever faced. It was a genuinely unsettling and memorable arc.
6) “The Gift” Batman

I’ve always been a fan of Dick Grayson, and I was shocked to learn about this alternate reality where he became Batman. It’s a really dark take! Apparently, Booster Gold tried to do something nice for Bruce Wayne by saving his parents, but it created a totally different timeline. In this version, Bruce never became Batman, and Dick ended up becoming a much more brutal, lethal Dark Knight. It’s heartbreaking to think about – he grew up without Bruce as a mentor, and Gotham was even more messed up than usual. He wasn’t just stopping crime; he was actively killing criminals. It’s a really grim story, honestly.
5) The Grim Knight

Let me tell you about the Grim Knight – a truly terrifying alternate Batman. This version comes from a Dark Multiverse reality where, after witnessing his parents’ murder, young Bruce Wayne actually killed the mugger, Joe Chill. That single act set him on a drastically different path. He became Batman, sure, but a brutal, merciless one. Within a year, he’d wiped out all of Gotham’s major crime bosses, but instead of peace, it just unleashed a free-for-all war between the remaining gangs. Eventually, Jim Gordon managed to take him down – though the Grim Knight vanished before anyone could really process what happened. It turns out he was recruited by the Batman Who Laughs, and we see him battling our heroes, including Gordon and his son. Later, he fully commits to the villain’s side, becoming one of Perpetua’s Dark Knights and defending Castle Bat against any heroes foolish enough to approach. He’s not just a dark version of Batman, he’s a genuinely frightening force.
4) Vampire Batman

Batman and vampires make a surprisingly good team – like a perfect flavor combination. They’ve clashed many times, and in one story, Batman: Red Rain, Batman actually became a vampire to defeat Dracula when the villain came to Gotham. However, giving in to the darkness led Batman on a violent spree, targeting all of his enemies. He even fought his ally, Jim Gordon, before realizing how monstrous he’d become. In a tragic showdown, Gordon destroyed the Batcave, and Batman ultimately sacrificed himself by walking into the sunlight.
3) Omega

As a huge Batman fan, I’ve seen a lot of dark takes on the character, but Omega Batman is seriously one of the most terrifying and effective villains. The story is just brutal – on his Earth, things went south fast after Superman fell to Lex Luthor. People stormed the Hall of Justice, and Batman, shockingly, let them in, wanting to force a choice. It backfired horribly; the heroes were torn apart, and everyone thought Bruce Wayne died in the chaos. But he didn’t! He went into hiding, healed up, and then decided the only way to fix things was to take over the world. He even defeated Darkseid and started using his head as a weapon! Can you imagine? He built an army of villains and waged war on Earth. Thankfully, a younger version of himself, along with the Joker, finally managed to stop him and end his reign of terror. It’s a really messed up, but compelling, alternate take on the character.
2) Flashpoint Batman

DC’s Flashpoint is a surprisingly grim story that introduced a popular alternate Batman. In this reality, Bruce Wayne died instead of his parents. Thomas Wayne became Batman, while Martha Wayne became the Joker – but a very different version. He used his wealth to establish casinos, infiltrating the criminal underworld and using his knowledge to brutally fight crime in Gotham. Even as an older man, he remained terrifying, and heroes knew danger followed him. He partnered with the Flash to restore his original world and later aided Bane in defeating Bruce Wayne, hoping to convince him to give up being Batman. Returning home, he saved his world, redeemed his wife, took one of Harvey Dent’s children as his Robin, and ultimately found happiness.
1) Batman Who Laughs

The Batman Who Laughs is an incredibly dangerous villain from the DC Multiverse. Originally from a dark alternate reality, he was infected with a powerful Joker toxin that stripped away his sense of right and wrong, essentially turning him into a twisted version of the Joker. He quickly murdered his entire Bat-Family and then systematically destroyed his world, killing both heroes and villains. After leaving his universe a desolate wasteland, he was discovered by Barbatos and rose to lead a team of corrupted Batmen known as the Dark Knights. He initiated a war against the DC Universe’s heroes, ultimately striving to become the most powerful and terrifying version of Batman ever seen – the Darkest Knight. He was a truly monstrous figure.
