Well, it’s official: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy won’t be back for a third season. Looking back, the first season really felt like a love letter to the entire Star Trek universe, especially considering it arrived around the franchise’s 60th anniversary. It was packed with nods to the past and some genuinely surprising continuations of old storylines, all delivered in a way that clearly targeted a younger, Gen Z audience. Interestingly, they’d already finished filming Season 2 before Season 1 even premiered, which is a bit unusual.
According to Variety, the second season will be the last for the series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. CBS Studios and Paramount+ released a statement expressing their pride in the show’s ambition, passion, and creativity.
This series brought fresh, compelling characters to viewers while also revisiting beloved ones, all while broadening the world of ‘Star Trek’ in innovative ways. Alex Kurtzman’s Star Trek Era Isn’t Over
The cancellation of Starfleet Academy isn’t entirely unexpected. The show had a difficult time finding viewers because it tried to blend familiar elements with a style geared towards a younger audience. Although the second season likely offered some improvements, it wasn’t enough to save the series. It’s particularly frustrating because the first season ended with a satisfying conclusion, while reports suggest the second season ends abruptly. Overall, the cancellation feels rather disorganized and incomplete.
What’s more worrying is that we’ve reached the end of an impressive 11-year run of continuous Star Trek shows being either produced or approved for future seasons. While seasons five of Strange New Worlds and two of Starfleet Academy are already filmed, what comes next is unclear. However, Variety reports that Alex Kurtzman, the creative force behind the current Trek series, is negotiating a new contract with CBS Studios to continue his work during the company’s ongoing changes.
Alex Kurtzman’s leadership of Star Trek has sparked debate. While Gene Roddenberry envisioned a hopeful future, Kurtzman often explores the Federation’s flaws, as seen in the thought-provoking ending of Starfleet Academy Season 1, which essentially put the Federation on trial. However, he’s undeniably talented, having created popular shows like Discovery and Strange New Worlds. It’s clear why CBS wants to continue working with him as they plan the future of the Star Trek franchise.
