‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Peter Parker Twist Fixes Forgotten ‘Ms. Marvel’ Moment

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has faced a particular challenge lately, but the new comic series Spider-Man: Brand New Day seems to have the answer. While the MCU is full of heroes and villains, a specific group of characters has been ready to take center stage. Though there have been previous efforts to introduce them, Brand New Day offers the most hopeful path forward so far.

The trailer for the new movie strongly suggests a big change for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: he’s developing the ability to shoot webs directly from his wrists. This is inspired by a storyline from a comic book published 54 years ago. While Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man had this ability back in 2002, it’s a significant development because it means Peter Parker no longer needs to rely on the web-shooters he created himself. This change is important for reasons beyond just the ability itself.

Spider-Man’s Mutation Storyline Is the Best Opening for the MCU’s X-Men Yet

Sony Pictures

The X-Men have been adapted for the screen many times over the years, but integrating them into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been tricky. When the MCU started with Iron Man in 2008, Marvel didn’t own the rights to the X-Men characters. Instead, characters like Wolverine and Magneto appeared in movies made by Fox. Even characters who are mutants in the comics, like Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, had their origins changed for the MCU. Disney’s purchase of Fox in 2019 removed these restrictions, but by then, the MCU already had a lot of established stories, so the X-Men haven’t played a significant role yet.

So far, the biggest hint that the X-Men might join the Marvel Cinematic Universe came in 2022 with the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel. The show surprisingly revealed that the main character, played by Iman Vellani, was a mutant, and a familiar tune from the original X-Men cartoon briefly played, leading fans to expect big things. Unfortunately, that storyline hasn’t really gone anywhere. Maybe Ms. Marvel wasn’t the right vehicle to introduce the X-Men, as it didn’t have a large enough audience. Brand New Day aims to fix that.

Typically, Marvel mutants are born with a genetic trait called the X-gene. Spider-Man doesn’t fit this definition, but it’s fair to consider him a mutant anyway. His DNA was altered when he was bitten by a radioactive spider, and the story arc Brand New Day shows this change continuing to develop over time. This puts him in a unique position – part traditional Marvel hero, part mutant – making him an ideal character to connect the X-Men to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Especially with talk of Sadie Sink potentially playing Jean Grey, Brand New Day feels like a particularly relevant story for bringing mutants into the MCU.

Marvel Can’t Keep Relying On Its Pre-MCU ‘X-Men’ Adaptations

Marvel Studios

Several fantastic X-Men projects were created completely separately from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Avengers: Doomsday and the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine are incorporating actors and storylines from these earlier works, this is happening after the fact, not as part of the original plan. The recent reboot of X-Men ’97 is also great, but it’s another example of celebrating a period before the MCU existed.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe needs its own unique version of the X-Men. While bringing back Hugh Jackman and the original cast is fun for exploring the multiverse, it’s not a sustainable plan for the future. If Sadie Sink were to play Jean Grey in the upcoming Brand New Day movie, it would be a significant step towards establishing a new team. The original X-Men actors are getting older, making a long-running role for them unlikely. Actors around Sink’s age are ideal for the next generation of live-action X-Men stories. Now, all Marvel needs to do is explain the history of mutants within the MCU, perhaps through Spider-Man: Brand New Day or another project.
