Love Story Creator Reveals Legendary Couple Who May Inspire Season 2

One of Hollywood’s most iconic couples could be getting the prestige TV treatment.

Before the first season of Love Story ends—wrapping up the show’s portrayal of the heartbreaking romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy—creator Connor Hines suggested a different famous couple could be the focus of a potential second season.

When asked about potential subjects for his next project, Connor mentioned Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, explaining, ‘They have the kind of passion that would be perfect.’ He shared this with Vanity Fair magazine.

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton began a famously passionate relationship while filming Cleopatra, despite both being married to other people at the time—Elizabeth to Eddie Fisher and Richard to Sybil Williams. They starred in eleven films together and were married from 1964 to 1974. After divorcing, they remarried a year later, but ultimately divorced again permanently in 1976, captivating the public with their turbulent romance both on and off screen.

Even after many years, Elizabeth—who passed away in 2011—felt that she and Richard would have reunited if he hadn’t died in 1984.

In a 1997 interview with Barbara Walters, she admitted it might sound foolish, but she believed she and her former partner would have remarried. She explained that their love was incredibly intense—so passionate that the good times were overwhelming. She felt everything, including their love for each other, was simply too much.

Even though viewers likely know the tragic fate of John and Carolyn in Love Story – they die in a plane crash in 1999 – actress Constance Zimmer, who plays Carolyn’s mother Ann Freeman in the series, says the final episode will still be incredibly emotional and hard to watch.

She explained to Decider that everyone already understands the story’s direction, and they’re focusing on how to tell it. The goal is to allow viewers to experience the same emotions they felt while watching the show and when the events originally unfolded.

The final episode of Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette will be shown on FX and Hulu on March 26th. Before then, you can find out more about what parts of the show are based on real events and what has been fictionalized.

Carolyn is feeling more and more alone in her Tribeca apartment, worn out by the constant attention of the paparazzi and hurt by the untrue and sensational stories in the tabloids – rumors about depression, drug use, even pregnancy. When she hears about the death of Princess Diana in a car accident, she’s shocked and can’t look away from the television. Meanwhile, John casually worries about the dishes and then goes for a run.

Carolyn recalls that despite Diana doing everything correctly and posing for all the pictures they wanted, the paparazzi still pursued her relentlessly, ultimately leading to the tragic events of August 31, 1997, in Paris.

John later confessed to his wife that he feared she might become a shut-in, and he was equally terrified that if he began watching the news about Princess Diana’s death, he wouldn’t be able to turn it off.

In person, John tried to convince the Queen to appear on the cover of George magazine, but she respectfully refused. Meanwhile, Carolyn sat close to Princess Diana at the funeral for Gianni Versace in Milan on July 22, 1997. Biz Mitchell, who was the executive editor of George at the time, told The Hollywood Reporter that John initially hesitated to cover Diana’s death. Ultimately, they published a powerful photo essay capturing the public’s mourning in London.

Carolyn was deeply affected by the Princess of Wales’s death. John confided in his friend Billy Noonan, saying he didn’t know how to help her, as she was very shaken up.

In her 2017 memoir, Jackie’s Girl, Kathy McKeon, who worked for Jacqueline Kennedy, shared a story about a family dinner in Hyannis Port following Princess Diana’s funeral. McKeon recalled that Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy expressed strong dislike for the paparazzi who constantly followed her, reportedly saying she “hated those bastards.”

She said she felt like yelling and swearing at them, explaining that they had been right behind her, practically on top of her, as they followed her inside.

To which John said, “You gotta just take it easy. Relax.”

After John’s dinner party – which he presented as being for Carolyn’s friends, though she corrected him, saying they were friends of both of them – a major argument erupts between the couple as Carolyn clears the table.

There was some tension between John and Carolyn. John joked that he was glad he never let Carolyn meet his mother, suggesting she wouldn’t have approved of their relationship. Carolyn, in turn, said John only contacted her when he felt he needed to avoid conflict, adding that she believed he knew he was making her unhappy.

Okay, let me tell you, this fight is rough. It’s a total breakdown where she feels completely suffocated and he accuses her of always playing the victim. Honestly, it gets so bad that John decides he needs to get away – he’s just completely drained from seeing how unhappy she is and feeling like he’s failing as a husband. He ends up saying he’s going to stay at the Stanhope Hotel, needing some space to clear his head. It’s a really sad moment, signaling a serious disconnect in their relationship.

She begs him not to leave, and he promises he’ll be back.

If this is the check-in at the Stanhope Hotel two days before the plane crash on July 16, 1999, it would mean the events in Love Story happened almost two years later than previously thought. Despite a difficult final few weeks, the couple enjoyed travel, parties, and some happiness during their almost three years together.

As Beller pointed out, the media profited from stories portraying their relationship as troubled, and pictures of Carolyn looking distressed. This pattern of focusing on negativity continued throughout their lives, boosting sales and attention.

Just before things got tense, John proposed they head out, but Carolyn gently reminded him to rest, since he was still recovering from a crash with his Buckeye powered parachute and was using crutches.

She adds, “Didn’t you promise Caroline you were done flying?”

As a longtime fan, I’ve noticed the recurring images of airplanes and flight throughout the show, and it always struck me as a subtle reminder of where this relationship is ultimately going. It’s like the writers don’t want us to forget the bigger picture, even when we’re caught up in the moment.

John was still recovering from a broken ankle when he took that flight. He’d broken it in May 1999 while crashing an ultralight parachute, and was using crutches at the time.

In his 2004 book, The Kennedy Curse, Edward Klein wrote that Jacqueline Kennedy begged her son not to pursue a pilot’s license. She reportedly said, “Please don’t do it,” explaining that the family had already experienced too many tragic deaths.

In the seventh episode, titled “Obsession,” the newly married couple returns from their honeymoon in Turkey to discover a large group of photographers camped outside their New York City apartment, and they refuse to go away.

It was truly as awful as people said. Paparazzi relentlessly followed Carolyn, constantly asking her to smile for the cameras. When she refused to answer their intrusive questions – things like whether she was expecting a baby – some began to insult her, hoping to provoke a response.

According to MJ Bettenhausen, as recounted in Elizabeth Beller’s biography Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Carolyn worried that people would lose interest in her after she got married. Bettenhausen felt this was another way Carolyn’s independent spirit was stifled.

For the movie Love Story, costume designer Rudy Mance accurately reproduced the complete Prada outfit Carolyn wore when she first encountered the paparazzi after returning home with John.

The woman’s outfit—a camel-colored pencil skirt, black sweater, knee-high boots, and black tote bag—mirrored her personality: stylish and sophisticated, yet understated.

Mance shared on FX’s Love Story podcast, hosted by Evan Ross Katz, that getting the props right for that scene was a big effort. They spent a lot of time sourcing items from places like eBay, Japan, Etsy, and Ukraine.

Carolyn was worried, but John tried to improve things outside their house. He asked the photographers to be respectful of his wife and give her some privacy as she got used to her new life.

According to Beller, he actually did that while Carolyn waited inside the entrance at 20 North Moore Street. He then stated that marriage is a major life change, especially for someone who isn’t used to public attention, and asked everyone to respect Carolyn’s privacy and give her space.

According to Steve Gillon’s 2019 book, American Prince, the brief peace between John F. Kennedy Jr. and the photographers immediately ended when he and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy began walking to their car. The photographers rushed forward, each trying to get a unique and valuable picture, which terrified Carolyn.

Carolyn was thrilled about a potential job at Ralph Lauren and her interview seemed to go perfectly. However, as she left, she discovered a crowd of photographers had gathered outside, creating a chaotic scene. Feeling overwhelmed and embarrassed by the intense attention, she sadly declined the job offer.

Although there’s no official record of Carolyn Bessette ever working for him, Ralph Lauren was reportedly very impressed with her style. According to Harper’s Bazaar, he even instructed his design team to keep her in mind with every creation, saying, “Every time you design something, think of Carolyn Bessette.”

Following a public argument between Carolyn and John, Ethel extends an invitation to her future niece-in-law, hosting her at her estate in Virginia, Hickory Hill.

Robert F. Kennedy’s widow offered Carolyn a stark but compassionate warning: once trust is lost, it’s incredibly difficult to regain. She explained that men can be deeply hurtful, pushing you to your limits and causing immense pain. Her advice was simple: don’t subject yourself to that kind of treatment.

Ethel actually had Carolyn brought to her home, where, according to J. Randy Taraborelli’s 2019 book The Kennedy Heirs, she told Carolyn she needed to ignore the negativity and move forward.

Oh my gosh, I heard the most amazing thing! Apparently, Ethel Kennedy – Ethel Kennedy! – told someone who was with Carolyn that being a Kennedy was… tough. Really tough. But she figured out how to cope, and it was so powerful! She said she started telling herself, every single morning, ‘I am enough.’ Just that. ‘I am enough.’ She said it sounds simple, but eventually you believe it, and no one – not even the Kennedys themselves – can ever take that feeling away from you. It’s like, she unlocked the secret to surviving in that family, and it was all about self-worth! I’ve been saying it to myself ever since, honestly. It’s just… incredible.

Ethel advised Carolyn to stay calm in public, as described in the book. She cautioned that these men were easily provoked and warned Carolyn not to let them bait her into behaving badly where everyone could see.

Carolyn tells her sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette (played by Sydney Lemmon), that she’s considering asking her to be her maid of honor. She explains that Lauren seemed upset about being left out of the wedding planning process.

Honestly, I’m really worried about how she’s feeling. Carolyn thinks she’s feeling left out, and I completely agree. It’s so important to me that we clear things up before my wedding – I just can’t start this new chapter with her holding a grudge against me. I really want her to feel included and happy for me.

Lauren says, “This will mean nothing to her. And it would have meant everything to me.”

John asked Carolyn to invite Caroline to be the maid of honor, hoping it would mend things after a difficult situation. John’s sister had blamed Carolyn for a public scene and even questioned whether they should get married. John believed having Carolyn ask Caroline was the best way to resolve the conflict.

Two weeks after their argument at the park, Carolyn went to Calvin to quit her job. She explained she was worried her personal life was interfering with her work, and Calvin admitted he was surprised and a little hurt by the news.

He described her as “a bright light” and assured her she would be well taken care of with Narciso Rodriguez—a former colleague—designing her wedding gown. Once she’s gone, he tidies up his design portfolio, and we briefly see a dress sketch tucked away in a drawer.

“Calvin was very upset” when Carolyn quit, a colleague told Beller. “He felt left behind.”

In the movie Love Story, Calvin finds out about the dress because Carolyn had been pictured with Narciso and Caroline. However, in real life, Carolyn actually quit her job before she started seriously planning the wedding.

Ann Freeman, played by Constance Zimmer, fears Carolyn is losing her identity in her marriage. She expresses this privately to her daughter, but surprisingly reveals the same concerns to everyone during a speech at the rehearsal dinner.

Ann described John as overwhelmingly loving and admitted she was concerned about how Carolyn would cope with such a strong personality. She wondered how anyone could stay grounded around someone so dominant and captivating, and ultimately hoped Carolyn would receive the support she needed from him.

John had a private conversation with his future mother-in-law, telling her that her daughter means everything to him.

I’ve always been fascinated by the details surrounding that night, and while we don’t know her exact words, Robert Littell, a close friend of John’s, wrote about it in his memoir, The Men We Became. He said Ann voiced some concerns about the marriage, suggesting she wasn’t sure it was the right thing for her daughter. It really painted a picture of her hesitations, even then.

And John, he wrote, was “visibly stung by his mother-in-law’s remarks.”

Littell remembered that while he and a few other guests continued the party on the beach, Carolyn had already gone to bed long before. This meant the story in the movie Love Story – where John and Carolyn fall asleep together on the beach and go swimming naked the morning of their wedding – was created to be a more romantic scene.

Carolyn had a major wardrobe mishap right before the event. She discovered Narciso’s dress, which didn’t have a zipper, needed to be pulled over her head—and she’d already had her makeup applied!

Gogo Ferguson, the designer of the couple’s unique rattlesnake rib wedding bands, shared in an interview that getting Carolyn into her dress was incredibly difficult. She described it as if the dress was flowing like cream over Carolyn’s body, and Narciso was struggling to fasten it. Terenzio noted that Narciso had to repeatedly adjust the neckline, and they eventually covered Carolyn’s head with a scarf to protect her hair and makeup during the process.

Gordon Henderson, a friend of the bride and the designer of the groom’s tuxedo and the groomsmen’s suits, shared with Town & Country that he also offered a handkerchief to help the groom feel his best. He explained that when a friend is getting married, you want to do everything you can to ensure they’re happy and the day goes smoothly.

In Beller’s Once Upon a Time, Carolyn needs to completely redo her hair and makeup after she gets dressed.

The ceremony didn’t begin until 7 p.m., later than the originally planned 5 p.m. John was delayed because he couldn’t find his shirt, and since the historic First African Baptist Church, built in the 1800s, didn’t have electricity, they had to use candles to light the space.

In episode 5, John proposes to Carolyn while they’re rowing a boat, following a trip to Hyannis Port. This is where she’s just met his family, including his formidable aunt, Ethel Kennedy (played by Jessica Harper), for the very first time.

Carolyn said she needs some time to consider it, explaining they have several important things to talk over first.

In 1994, Per Beller and John brought Carolyn to the family’s vacation home for Labor Day weekend. John signed up to help with breakfast that weekend, but didn’t ask Carolyn to join him.

Terenzio says John proposed to Carolyn while they were on a trip to Martha’s Vineyard over the Fourth of July weekend in 1995. He playfully told her, “Fishing is so much better with a partner,” as he asked her to marry him.

He proposed with a diamond and sapphire eternity band. On the show, JFK Jr. claimed it had belonged to his mother, but actually, he had it specially made. He asked Jackie Kennedy’s close friend, Maurice Tempelsman, to design a ring that resembled her famous emerald and sapphire ring – often called the “swimming ring.” According to Terenzio, John gave Carolyn both rings.

According to a friend of John F. Kennedy Jr., Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy made him wait around three weeks before responding to a proposal. While biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli noted in his 2019 book, American Prince, that she didn’t explicitly say yes, she was seen wearing an engagement ring and told friends they were planning a wedding. However, in an oral history, another friend, RoseMarie Terenzio, recalled Carolyn telling her they became engaged over the holiday weekend.

Whether it was before or after they started dating, the couple was engaged for several months before their well-known argument in Washington Square Park in 1996.

Carolyn was a trusted confidante of her boss, Calvin Klein, and she also enjoyed a close friendship with his wife, photographer Kelly Klein.

In the movie Love Story, Kelly (played by Leila George) challenges Calvin when he says that Carolyn can’t continue working for him because the very public news of her engagement to JFK Jr. – splashed across the cover of the New York Post – will be a distraction.

Kelly retorted, “With all due respect, you’re hardly one to talk about keeping secrets.” Calvin replied, “You knew what you were getting into from the start.”

The designer invited Kelly to join her at a gala that evening, hinting that it would be their last time together – a clear sign they were breaking up.

Calvin and Kelly announced they were separating in August 1996. According to columnist Liz Smith, they released a statement saying they remained good friends and had decided to live separately, with mutual respect, and hoped to resolve any differences. Their divorce was finalized in 2006.

At 83 years old, Calvin has been with his partner, model Kevin Baker, for a decade. Baker is 46 years younger than him.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn skips John’s press conference where he introduces George magazine. At the event, he reveals the first cover, which features a playfully suggestive image of Cindy Crawford dressed as George Washington.

She watched the news from home, understanding John had to deny proposing to her. She knew if he didn’t, rumors about her rejecting him would distract from the important news about George.

Carolyn deliberately avoided the launch event on September 7, 1995. Terenzio, responsible for publicly denying John was engaged after a photo of Carolyn’s ring caused rumors, explained that John and his partner, Michael Berman, believed her attendance would be a distraction and that she didn’t mind not being there.

John’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recalled in an interview that Carolyn was deeply upset by John’s initial refusal to publicly acknowledge their engagement. Chermayeff believed this was an early indication of the challenges Carolyn would face throughout their relationship – a preview of what life with John would be like.

In the fifth episode, Carolyn and John have a heated fight while walking their dog, but the episode concludes with a tearful Carolyn saying yes to John’s marriage proposal.

As someone who follows celebrity relationships closely, I remember the fallout between John and Carolyn back on February 25th, 1996, like it was yesterday. It was everywhere in the press! The details – John appearing to take Carolyn’s engagement ring, him breaking down crying on the street, and that incredibly dramatic moment with the dog and the leash – were all splashed across the headlines. It was a very public, very painful fight, and the images are still so vivid. Honestly, it felt like we were all watching their private life unfold right before our eyes, especially with Carolyn famously declaring, ‘You’ve got my ring, you’re not getting my dog!’

The show centers around an argument stemming from John’s rejected proposal—he angrily claims everything would be fine if she’d just accepted it—even though they’d actually been engaged for around five months. The series reveals that Carolyn secretly tried on the ring and agreed to wear it privately, but hadn’t formally accepted his marriage proposal before the fight began.

In her interview, Terenzio remembered that she and her husband often argued because John’s friends were taking advantage of him.

At a wedding, they found themselves seated beside a reporter from the New York Times who was covering the event for the ‘Vows’ column. According to Terenzio, Carolyn believed it was wrong to put a friend in that situation. While she regretted the argument, she was also upset with John, feeling she’d been trying to shield him from being exploited.

When he brings Carolyn home to his loft for the first time, John realizes he forgot his keys.

Although it looked good on television, John was actually quite forgetful in real life, often misplacing his keys and wallet. This habit later made Carolyn hesitant to fly with him by himself after he earned his pilot’s license.

Beyond hinting at what’s to come, John also doesn’t mention the true nature of the party he invites Carolyn to – it’s a formal birthday dinner for his sister, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg.

When John’s behavior worries Carolyn, his wife, Caroline (Grace Gummer) quickly explains that he’s just forgetful, and not intentionally bringing unexpected guests.

According to Carole Radziwill’s memoir, What Remains, John introduced Carolyn to his sister on her 37th birthday—November 27, 1994—at a party held at Carolyn’s Park Avenue apartment, rather than a formal dinner.

The former Real Housewives star, who attended with Anthony and was excited to see Carolyn, described her friend entering the secure room looking beautiful and uniquely herself, and acting very warmly and spontaneously.

Caroline embraced John and greeted Carolyn with a friendly “So nice to meet you,” according to Carole. Afterward, Carolyn’s friends offered polite smiles before turning their attention back to John.

Beller’s book, Once Upon a Time, reveals that initial impressions of Carolyn and Caroline not getting along were incorrect. Someone who observed them having lunch described the pair as genuinely enjoying each other’s company, with lively conversation and plenty of laughter.

After playing touch football with friends, John discovered a letter in his gym bag suggesting Carolyn had used her boss, Calvin Klein, to get a date with him – that she was actively pursuing him. When Carolyn visited later, John confronted her about the letter, and she was shocked and hurt that he’d believe such a thing, so she left.

After what felt like a long time, he finally came to her apartment and admitted he’d made a mistake. This honest conversation led to him telling her he loved her for the very first time.

According to Beller, John received a letter outlining rumors about Carolyn’s active social life and relationships, but this happened early in their dating history. Following a summer romance in 1992, John abruptly ended things after reading the letter. Carolyn then refused his attempts to apologize for over a year.

The new series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette opens with Carolyn (played by Sarah Pidgeon) advising actress Annette Bening (played by Megan Channell) to wear a Calvin Klein suit to the Bugsy premiere instead of the dress the designer chose for her.

It’s unknown if she created the look for future wife of Warren Beatty, but a 1996 New York Times article revealed Carolyn was the preferred salesperson for Calvin Klein’s famous customers, like Annette, Diane Sawyer, and Blaire Trump.

According to Paul Wilmott, who was Calvin Klein’s VP of public relations at the time, she would help customers find clothes that suited them, offer styling advice, and ultimately, sell a significant amount of merchandise – reportedly millions of dollars worth over time. He described it as a truly special service.

In a memorable scene from Love Story, Carolyn demonstrates her marketing skill by advising Calvin (played by Alessandro Nivola) to feature Kate Moss in an advertising campaign.

Carolyn was one of the first people to recognize Kate Moss’s potential, and she played a key role in shaping the Calvin Klein image of the 1990s.

In the movie Love Story, Calvin brings Carolyn and John together at a charity event in 1992, and they immediately feel a connection. However, Carolyn playfully declines to give Calvin her phone number, reminding him that he can reach her at work.

“He was simply bored,” Carolyn explained to her friends at the nightclub as Michael Bergin, known to them as the “sexy doorman” and sometimes her romantic partner, entered the club. (Noah Fearnley plays Michael Bergin.)

John unexpectedly appeared at Calvin Klein and requested a private fitting with Carolyn. He then invited her to dinner, and when he left, her coworkers were completely shocked and excited.

According to Elizabeth Beller’s 2024 biography, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy first met in the spring of 1992. He was at Calvin Klein for a private fitting, and her coworkers were reportedly very excited. John then asked Carolyn to join him at a gala, but she initially thought another woman was his date. When she realized this wasn’t the case, she declined his invitation to an after-party, as MJ Bettenhausen told Beller.

Carolyn and Michael, a model who previously worked as a hotel doorman, had a casual relationship starting in the fall of 1992, but it wasn’t consistent, according to Beller’s book.

In his 2004 book, The Other Man, Bergin claimed he continued a sexual relationship with Carolyn even after she met John, and all the way until her death. However, according to Beller, many of Carolyn’s friends doubted this claim.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn is waiting at an Indian restaurant for John. After about 20 minutes, just as she’s about to leave, he arrives riding his bicycle.

He accidentally left the car unlocked, and when they finished their long date, they discovered it had been stolen. This meant he ended up walking Carolyn home instead.

He said he wished he hadn’t been in such a rush as they reached her door. She asked what he meant, and he kissed her. He then wondered if he’d see her again, and she replied that she’d enjoyed their evening together before ending the date.

In real life, John and this person likely had a first date, and it’s possible John biked there and was a little late. However, the cozy scene of them connecting over drinks was probably staged for the show.

Daryl Hannah, who has a complicated relationship with John, is at his apartment when he returns home. He’s just been telling his cousin and best friend, Anthony Radziwill, that all he wants to do is call Carolyn.

He’s planning to take Daryl to a wedding in October 1993 – his cousin Edward Kennedy Jr.’s – despite his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy, not approving. Meanwhile, Carolyn discovers through a tabloid magazine that the man who seemed so interested in her is actually getting back together with his famous ex-girlfriend.

John started sending Carolyn flowers and, when they ran into each other at an event, confessed he was struggling because he thought she disliked him. Carolyn responded that she didn’t know him well enough to feel that way.

The unexpected meeting was a memorable way to introduce the star of Splash in Love Story, but producers didn’t consult with Daryl, who has been married to Neil Young since 2018.

Producer Nina Jacobson explained to Gold Derby that they focus on understanding characters deeply. She said it’s difficult to push specific storylines when talking directly to the people those characters are based on, so they generally avoid doing that unless absolutely necessary.

Daryl acts as a challenge to what the story is trying to achieve, according to Jacobson. However, the writers still make sure to portray her as someone who genuinely understands the celebrity lifestyle in a way that Carolyn doesn’t.

When John walks in and sees Daryl with her eccentric friends, it’s a clear signal that major changes are coming. She ultimately breaks up with him, pushing him to think about what he truly desires.

Daryl promised she would return for her dog, Hank. However, while John was walking Hank, someone asked him for an autograph. In the distraction, Hank slipped his leash and was tragically struck by a taxi. John then traveled to Los Angeles to deliver Hank’s ashes to Daryl.

According to the 2024 book JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, John F. Kennedy Jr.’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recounted that John’s dog, Hank, ran into traffic and was hit by a car while they were walking in Central Park in May 1994.

According to his friend Steven Gillon, he traveled to Los Angeles to bury a dog. While he was there, his mother’s health suddenly declined. He felt angry that Daryl had made him attend the dog’s funeral when his mother was seriously ill with cancer.

In the movie Love Story, Jackie (played by Naomi Watts) leaves a voicemail for John while he’s flying, then collapses at home. This scene was created to be dramatic, but it also emphasizes how seriously ill she was after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December 1993. She passed away on May 19, 1994.

John and Carolyn hadn’t seen each other since the disastrous gala until they ran into each other at a fundraiser on May 18, 1992.

They connected quickly and dated all summer, but then drifted apart for nearly two years, as described in Beller’s book. It wasn’t until after Jackie passed away that they finally became a lasting couple.

According to executive producer Brad Simpson, the couple’s relationship was more complicated than what the show could portray. He told USA Today that they had to move the storyline forward and believed viewers wouldn’t enjoy watching the ups and downs of their on-again, off-again romance.
