Steven Spielberg’s Masterpiece War Movie ‘Saving Private Ryan’ Is Streaming for Free on Tubi in April 2026

Many consider Saving Private Ryan to be one of the best war films ever created, and it’s now available to stream for free. While films like The Deer Hunter, Full Metal Jacket, The Hurt Locker, Apocalypse Now, and Hacksaw Ridge are also highly regarded, Saving Private Ryan stands out for its incredibly realistic portrayal of war – so much so that it triggered flashbacks in some World War II veterans. With a powerful cast and directed by Steven Spielberg, its critical acclaim is well-deserved.

Nearly three decades after its release, the World War II film Saving Private Ryan will be available to stream on Tubi for free, starting April 1, 2026. It’s joining other popular movies like Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy and The Rock on the streaming service. As with many films on Tubi, Saving Private Ryan will likely be available for about a month, and will probably be removed from the platform by early May 2026.

Released in 1998, Saving Private Ryan tells the story of a World War II mission to find and rescue Private Ryan (Matt Damon) after his three brothers have been killed. Captain Miller (Tom Hanks), a seasoned soldier, leads a team through enemy lines in Nazi-occupied France, starting with the dangerous beaches of Normandy, to bring Ryan home. It’s a difficult and perilous journey.

‘Saving Private Ryan’ Is a Star-Studded Masterpiece

It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the powerful opening of Saving Private Ryan and forget just how talented the entire cast was. Beyond that iconic scene, every actor delivers a convincing performance, drawing you into the story and making you feel like one of the soldiers searching for Private Ryan. In addition to stars like Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, the film features strong performances from Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, Barry Pepper, Adam Goldberg, Giovanni Ribisi, Nathan Fillion, Bryan Cranston, Ted Danson, Paul Giamatti, and even a standout performance from Vin Diesel.

Let me tell you, this movie really resonated with audiences. While critics clearly liked it – a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is nothing to sniff at – it was the viewers who truly fell in love with it, giving it a whopping 95% score based on over 250,000 ratings! I saw so many comments calling it the best World War II film ever made. People were particularly struck by how realistically it portrayed the war, especially that incredible opening scene – one commenter even shared seeing veterans moved to tears after watching it. It’s a powerful, accurate, and clearly deeply affecting film.

How ‘Saving Private Ryan’ Shot That Opening Scene

DreamWorks Pictures/Paramount Pictures

To capture the famous opening scene, the filmmakers actually built four different beach sets. This allowed them to quickly move to a new set for each take while the previous one was prepared for the next shot. The entire scene cost around $12 million and took 19 days to film in order, but the result was well worth the effort.
