Jay-Z Says Daughter Blue Ivy “Fought” For Cowboy Carter Tour Spot

Blue Ivy Carter’s not going to stop, she’s always going to work harder.

That’s how Blue Ivy’s dad, Jay-Z, sees her growth as a dancer. She started as a guest performer on Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour and quickly became a principal dancer on the 2025 Cowboy Carter tour.

Jay, 56, told GQ in an interview published on March 24th that her performance was incredible. He explained that during the first tour, there was a lot of talk about her initial performance, and she put in a lot of effort to prepare. However, he felt she wasn’t fully engaged at first, just going through the motions. Then, he said, she really started to push herself and give it her all.

He explained that it was likely the first time she’d ever had to struggle for something—that she wasn’t used to things coming easily. He emphasized that she really had to work for what she achieved.

Blue showed incredible dedication, performing in several segments of Cowboy Carter’s 32 shows around the world. She was so enthusiastic that her dad eventually asked her to take a break during some songs.

Jay-Z said his daughter is involved in almost every aspect of her mother Beyoncé’s performances. He explained he had to limit her involvement, saying, ‘I told her she couldn’t be on stage during the ‘Six-inch heels’ part—it was too risky!’ Jay-Z and Beyoncé also have 8-year-old twins, Rumi and Sir.

Aside from dancing the “Run this Town” artist revealed the teen has a natural gift with music.

He told me that Blue is an incredibly talented pianist, though she refuses to take lessons. She wants to keep playing for fun, not as work. What’s amazing is she has perfect pitch – if she hears a tune, she’ll ask you to play it again, and then she figures it out herself.

He explained that her success comes naturally – it’s pure talent. However, he emphasized that she did put in the effort for this particular achievement, and he’s incredibly proud of her determination to pursue her passion.

Like her parents, Blue Ivy seems destined for the stage. Even her younger sister, Rumi, briefly appeared on the set of Cowboy Carter, and as Jay-Z pointed out, it’s clear Blue has caught the performing bug – he joked that she’ll likely never leave the stage!

Watching his and Beyoncé’s kids embrace their talents has made Jay’s fatherhood era even better.

The award-winning artist explained that family gives life purpose. They’re willing to travel anywhere and do whatever it takes, then immediately return home just to be with their children – whether it’s taking them to school or picking them up. These moments make everything feel more significant.

Following a memorable stage debut with her mother during the 2023 Renaissance World Tour, where she performed in two major dance routines, Blue Ivy is back on stage for the Cowboy Carter tour.

In April 2025, she joined her mother on stage as a featured dancer, performing throughout the entire show and even having a special solo performance.

At the 2025 Grammys in February, Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy, was with her when she made history. Beyoncé seemed shocked when Taylor Swift announced that her album, Cowboy Carter, had won Best Country Album.

Despite the surprise, Blue gently encouraged her to get up and walk to the stage to receive her award.

As a lifestyle expert, I remember being so touched by the tribute to Jay-Z at his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2021! It was amazing to see so many people show their love and respect – over 30 celebrities participated, including the incredibly talented Beyoncé and her daughter, Blue Ivy, who was only nine at the time. It was a really special moment!

Blue Ivy Carter won her first BET Award in June 2020 for her contribution to the song “Brown Skin Girl.” She was nominated alongside Alicia Keys (“Underdog”), Ciara, Lupita Nyong’o, Ester Dean, City Girls, and LaLa for “Melanin,” Layton Greene for “I Choose,” Lizzo and Missy Elliott for “Tempo,” and Rapsody and PJ Morton for “Afeni.”

In 2020, Blue Ivy Carter took on a new role as an audiobook narrator. She narrated Hair Love, a popular children’s book by Matthew A. Cherry, which was a bestseller according to the New York Times. Blue Ivy is the daughter of Beyoncé and Jay-Z.

Beyoncé’s fans loved it when Blue Ivy playfully interrupted her grandmother, Tina Lawson’s, Mother’s Day video on Instagram in 2020. Right after Tina wished everyone a happy Mother’s Day, Blue Ivy sweetly added, “And don’t forget all the beautiful daughters out there, which I am one of!”

The coronavirus pandemic is a serious issue, and Blue Ivy helped spread an important message on her grandmother Tina’s Instagram. She showed everyone how to properly wash their hands, explaining, “This is why it’s very important to wash your hands!” She continued, “If you wash your hands, they’ll stay clean, but dirty hands can make you sick.”

Back in March 2020, while at a Los Angeles Lakers game with her dad, Jay-Z, Blue Ivy was thrilled to meet NBA star LeBron James. After Jay-Z encouraged her, she bravely asked him for an autographed basketball.

“Do you have school on Monday?” the Lakers player asked. “If you do, you’ll have whatever this is by the time you finish for the day.”

Blue Ivy’s success continued as she and her mother, Beyoncé, along with artists SAINt JHN and Wizkid, won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration in 2020 for their song “Brown Skin Girl.”

I absolutely love this song! It’s part of the Lion King: The Gift album, and it was so well-deserved when it won the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award at the 2019 BET Soul Train Awards. It really is a special piece of music.

Blue Ivy Carter, a well-known figure in pop culture, had her photo creatively directed by her father, Jay-Z, at the 2020 Super Bowl in Miami.

Beyoncé’s daughter, Blue Ivy, made a memorable appearance in the music video for her song “Spirit.” The colorful video, which accompanies the song from the remake of The Lion King, showed Blue and Beyoncé dressed alike in purple dresses and with matching red hair. It’s clear Blue is starting to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a performer.

Blue Ivy earned high praise when her name became the focus of a trademark dispute. Lawyers for Beyoncé’s company actually described her as “a cultural icon” in court documents.

The legal document stated that Blue Ivy Carter is a well-known figure who has been called a “mini style star” and praised for her fashion choices over the years. Her life and what she does are widely followed by both the media and the public.

Beyoncé and her daughter Blue Ivy were covered in diamonds at the world premiere of The Lion King in July 2019. They looked like true royalty as they walked the red carpet, dressed in their finest clothes.

In March 2019, Blue Ivy had her grandmother and the audience laughing with a silly joke. She asked, “Hey! So, how many petals—I mean, how many lips does a flower have?”

“Well, how many?” Tina replied.

“Two lips,” Blue Ivy responded. “You get it? There’s a kind of flower that’s called a tulip.”

Nine-year-old Blue Ivy is already an experienced traveler. During the summer of 2018, she got to see Europe while her parents, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, were performing on their On The Run II tour.

Thanks to a stylist, Blue dressed to impress while abroad.

In 2018, Blue Ivy scolded her grandmother, Tina Knowles, for recording video at a ballet performance in Paris. Apparently, Blue Ivy didn’t want anyone filming!

“You’re not supposed to take videos grandma,” the bold kid informed Tina.

At the 2018 Wearable Art Gala, Blue Ivy and Tyler Perry had a spirited bidding war over a painting by Tiffanie Anderson. Tyler Perry shared on TODAY that Blue Ivy was so eager to win, she kept grabbing the bidding paddle from both Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Not wanting to be outbid by a child, Perry ultimately won with a $20,000 bid – $1,000 higher than Blue Ivy’s last offer.

In 2018, Blue Ivy caught the attention of the internet when she appeared to gently scold her famous parents during Camila Cabello’s speech at the Grammys about Dreamers and immigration reform.

While sitting with her parents, Blue seemed to signal to Beyoncé and Jay-Z to stop or calm down as the Cuban-American singer was speaking.

Blue Ivy truly embodies Black girl magic, and a lot of that shines through her incredible style, thanks to the amazing clothes her parents choose for her.

Okay, so I found out the amazing person responsible for all of his incredible outfits! I was doing some digging, and it turns out it’s Manuel A. Mendez! He started as an assistant, can you believe it? But now he’s the stylist – basically, the genius behind every single iconic look. I’m seriously obsessed with his work!
