‘For All Mankind’ Renewed for Season 6 by Apple TV

Apple TV+’s acclaimed sci-fi series, For All Mankind, which imagines a world where the US and Soviet Union continued competing in space, is heading into its fifth season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this will be followed by a sixth and final season next year, bringing the show to a conclusion.

I remember when For All Mankind first came out on November 1st, 2019 – it was right when Apple TV+ launched! It’s been one of their original shows ever since, and Apple’s consistently backed it, even though it hasn’t gotten quite the same level of hype as shows like Severance or Ted Lasso. Honestly, with six seasons under its belt, it’s going to be one of the longest-running shows on Apple TV+, and as far as adult-focused series go, only Slow Horses – which is already coming back for a seventh season – will have had a longer run.

Showrunners Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi expressed their excitement about concluding the story of For All Mankind after six seasons, saying it’s been a wonderful experience. They’re proud of the show and thankful to Apple TV and Sony Pictures Television for their support in bringing it to a satisfying conclusion.

The show For All Mankind begins in the late 1960s, and each season then jumps forward about ten years to explore how continued investment in space exploration has changed the world. The fifth season, starting March 27th, takes place in the 2010s, where a successful colony exists on Mars, but its residents are starting to resent being controlled by Earth.

One of the things that makes For All Mankind stand out is how it’s handled its characters over the years. While some original characters, like Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman), have remained throughout the series – evolving from a promising young pilot to an elderly man living on Mars – others have left the show, and new characters have been introduced. Season 5 will feature Ed’s grandson, Alex (Sean Kaufman), in a significant role, demonstrating this ongoing shift in focus.

Matt Wolpert, the show’s creator, once mentioned they envisioned the series running for “around seven seasons.” With six seasons completed, that’s close enough. Following the show’s typical timeline, the final season will likely be set in the 2020s, bringing the story up to the present day and providing a satisfying conclusion.

Though new seasons of For All Mankind have sometimes been spaced years apart, Season 6 is scheduled for 2027, so fans won’t have a long wait to see the series conclude. And if Season 5 is similar to previous seasons, it promises to be excellent.
