PlayStation Is Reportedly Shutting Down Another Studio That It Just Established in 2025

PlayStation is closing another one of its game development studios, Dark Outlaw Games. This follows their announcement just over a month ago that Bluepoint Games, known for remaking popular titles like Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, would be shutting down. It appears the closure of Bluepoint was just the first of several planned studio closures.

News started spreading today on the ResetEra forum that Dark Outlaw Games, a studio PlayStation recently created in 2025, is shutting down. While the reason for the closure isn’t clear yet, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier confirmed the news. In addition, PlayStation is reportedly laying off employees in the US and UK.

This Is a Baffling Move by PlayStation

It’s surprising to see Dark Outlaw Games close so soon after being founded. The studio, established in March 2025, was led by Jason Blundell, a key contributor to the popular Zombies mode in the Call of Duty franchise.

Before joining Dark Outlaw, Blundell worked at Deviation Games, a studio developing a game exclusively for PlayStation. When that project was canceled, Deviation Games closed down. However, PlayStation was impressed with Blundell’s work and brought him in to start Dark Outlaw. Now, Blundell is facing another studio closure, and Dark Outlaw never had the chance to release a game.

The recent closures of Dark Outlaw and Bluepoint are just a few examples of PlayStation’s challenges during the PS5 era. Other initiatives, such as the game Concord, the acquisition of Bungie, the underwhelming performance of PSVR2, and a focus on live-service games, haven’t gone as planned. Despite these setbacks, the PS5 continues to be a strong seller, demonstrating the enduring popularity of the PlayStation brand.
