Science fiction movies have seen a remarkable resurgence over the past 25 years, creating a new golden age for the genre. After hitting a high point in the 1980s and focusing on big action sequences in the 1990s, sci-fi has become a mainstream and hugely popular form of entertainment, fueled by countless blockbuster hits. With many exciting new releases planned for 2026 and beyond, now is the time to watch one of the best sci-fi films of the 21st century, as it will soon be leaving Netflix.
Neill Blomkamp’s 2009 film, District 9, is a highly regarded science fiction action movie. It follows a government worker in Johannesburg, South Africa, who’s responsible for moving alien refugees. He unexpectedly begins to transform into one of them and must team up with an alien to survive. The film was both a box office success, earning $211 million worldwide, and a critical favorite, with a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and four Academy Award nominations, including a nomination for Best Picture. If you’re interested in watching, it will be leaving Netflix on April 1st, so you only have a week left to stream it.
What Makes District 9 So Great?
Many consider District 9 a science fiction classic because of its clever use of familiar genre elements to comment on real-world social problems. Instead of the usual alien invasion story, the film explores human cruelty by portraying the aliens as refugees. This setup powerfully critiques issues like apartheid, xenophobia, and social segregation. The movie’s unique mockumentary style—combining found footage, news reports, and traditional filmmaking—makes it feel incredibly realistic and more like an important documentary than a fictional story.
This movie cleverly uses science fiction to examine important social problems while still delivering everything fans expect from the genre. It’s particularly strong in creating a believable world, opting for a gritty, rundown slum in Johannesburg instead of a typical sleek, futuristic setting. The alien technology feels used, dirty, and very human. Remarkably, despite costing only $30 million to make, District 9 boasted visual effects that were on par with much bigger budget blockbusters and still look impressive today. The aliens’ unique, armored bodies are incredibly realistic and seamlessly integrated into the live action. Beyond its visuals, the film also features thrilling, emotionally powerful action scenes that build to a long, intense finale.
Where to Stream District 9 After It Leaves Netflix?
It’s currently unclear where you’ll be able to stream District 9 after April 1st. The movie is presently only available on Netflix, and it may disappear from the platform then. While it could end up on another streaming service, that hasn’t been confirmed, as most services haven’t announced their April 2026 lineups yet. Even if it’s removed from streaming, fans will still be able to rent or buy the film online.
