What Sarah Michelle Gellar, Shannen Doherty Never Got to Experience

Some friendships transcend this world.

Sarah Michelle Gellar will always cherish her connection with the late Shannen Doherty.

In an interview with People published on March 24th, Sarah shared that before the passing of the Beverly Hills, 90210 star in July 2024, she’d worked to ensure she had no regrets. She believes they succeeded, stating, “I don’t think we have any.”

Sarah shared that the one experience she and her friend weren’t able to share together was a large trip to Italy. However, after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, her friend did eventually get to go in January 2024—but with her oncologist, Dr. Lawrence Piro, instead of Sarah Michelle. Sarah was just happy her friend could make the trip.

Sarah Michelle Gellar recently recalled hearing someone describe her relationship with the late Shannen Doherty, saying they “enjoyed the hell out of each other.” She felt it perfectly captured their dynamic, especially considering it had been almost two years since Doherty’s passing.

“We made the most of our time together,” she said. “If my partner suggested something spontaneous and exciting, I was always ready to jump in and do it.”

For Sarah Michelle, Shannen’s passing also imparted an important lesson.

Honestly, hearing her say that just hit me. It’s like, she gets it, you know? She totally understands how fast everything is going. It’s a reminder that you really need to grab onto the good stuff while you can, because if you blink, you’ll miss it. It’s like the world is spinning faster and faster, and she’s right – we can get lost in it all if we’re not careful. It makes me want to soak up every single moment, just because she said so.

Ever since her friend passed away, Sarah Michelle has consistently found ways to remember and celebrate her life.

Interestingly, on the first anniversary of Shannen’s death – just two days before Sarah Michelle’s birthday – the star of I Know What You Did Last Summer vowed to continue their yearly tradition.

She shared on Instagram in April 2025, ‘We’ve always celebrated our birthdays together, and I’ll continue that tradition this year by celebrating you. I’m so grateful we were all together last year on your birthday, even though we didn’t know it would be our last celebration like that. Happy Birthday, Shannen.’
