As a movie fan, I’ve definitely noticed how much things have changed! These days, it feels like franchises rule everything. The big shared universes, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, have been massively successful and become a huge part of our culture. But even before that, sequels were always popular – studios would try to build on a hit movie and keep the money coming in. The best franchises really nail it – they’re both popular with audiences and critics, and they make a lot of money. Sadly, not all franchises are created equal, and sometimes they just go on for too long, losing their spark.
Many big movie franchises have failed, but some surprisingly keep going even when audiences have lost interest. These franchises often drag on long after anyone wants another sequel. It’s probably best if these series ended, or at least paused for a significant amount of time.
7) The Crow

I absolutely loved the original The Crow from 1994 – it’s still one of the best superhero movies out there that isn’t Marvel or DC. But honestly, everything that came after? It just hasn’t lived up to it. They’ve made sequels, a reboot, even a TV show, and it feels like they’ve slowly chipped away at what made the first movie so special. I really think it would have been better if they’d just left the original as a perfect, standalone film. Each new attempt just makes me wish they’d stop trying to revive it.
6) Fast & Furious

Many movie series have complicated storylines, but the Fast & Furious films are unique in how openly they’ve changed direction. What began as a realistic crime drama focused on street racing evolved into over-the-top action movies when the original concept lost steam. While the series has given us some truly amazing—and often unbelievable—moments, it’s probably time for it to end, or at least pause for a while.
5) Amityville Horror

The Amityville Horror movies aren’t usually considered among the greatest horror franchises. While the original story of a haunted house was once truly frightening, numerous remakes and sequels have diminished its power. Doubts about whether the story was actually true have also hurt the series, and with so many films already made, it probably time to end the Amityville Horror franchise.
4) Madea

Even when Tyler Perry’s Madea films were most popular, they weren’t usually considered among the greatest comedies. The character has been in 15 movies over the last twenty years, and while Madea has provided plenty of laughs, she’s starting to feel a bit repetitive. Given that the Madea series has already produced more films than most comedy franchises, it’s likely time for Perry to retire the character.
3) The Smurfs

The Smurfs have been a beloved part of television and film for over sixty years. While the original TV show was a hit and several movies followed, recent films haven’t lived up to the quality of earlier installments and the franchise is starting to feel stale. Though the Smurfs likely won’t disappear entirely, a significant break from the big screen might be what they need to regain their appeal.
2) The Expendables

The Expendables series improved upon its initial film with a stronger sequel, but subsequent movies didn’t maintain that quality. The latest installment, Expend4bles, was a critical and commercial failure, landing it among the year’s worst films. Given that the action stars involved are getting older, it’s likely time to end the series and let the actors explore other opportunities.
1) Saw

The Saw movies are famous for their gruesome and inventive traps, and they were once highly regarded for being scary and smartly written. But as more Saw films were made, the series started to feel like a parody of itself, with each new installment becoming less impressive and the storyline unnecessarily complicated. After ten films, it feels like the franchise has run out of original ideas, and a break from making new ones would be a good thing.
