Alinea, a company that tracks sales data, recently shared its estimates for how well the game Marathon is selling. We initially thought their numbers seemed a bit low, but information from Forbes suggests they might actually be accurate.
I was checking out the sales numbers for Bungie’s new shooter, and it’s doing really well! It’s sold 1.2 million copies since launching on March 5th, and most people are buying it on Steam. That works out to around $55 million in revenue so far, which is awesome!
It adds that it predicts just 217k players purchased the game on the PS5 – a pretty miserable 19%.
The game had a strong launch, reaching 478,000 daily players. Player numbers dipped to 345,000 the following weekend, but then climbed back up to 380,000 this past weekend (March 21st and 22nd) after the release of the popular endgame raid, Cryo Archive.
Just to be clear, these figures are estimates, but Forbes reports a Bungie employee confirmed they’re generally accurate. So, they’re likely pretty close to the real numbers.
And the problem is that they’re pretty unremarkable for a game of this scale.
Bungie is a highly respected and well-funded game studio, and this is their first major new game in almost ten years. The game likely cost a lot to develop, and Sony probably has very high hopes for its success.
According to Forbes, Bungie will continue with its planned content releases and operations for the time being.
The game is receiving positive feedback, including a 9/10 score from us, and early players seem to enjoy it. However, the main question is whether enough people are playing to justify continued support and development.
Epic Games announced today that they’ve cut over 1,000 jobs, largely because fewer people are playing Fortnite. It will be interesting to watch how Sony responds to this situation, as while the numbers aren’t terrible, they are concerning.
