Whether you’re playing the main Monster Hunter games or Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection, having the right equipment is crucial. Every item you bring helps you survive against the powerful monsters you’ll encounter.
Although easier to pick up than the main series games, choosing the right gear is crucial. Armor is obtained as complete sets, and the resistances and special abilities each set provides are very important – here are some of the best options.
Every armor shown here is with their level three values.
Sinster Armor – Magnamalo
- Defense – 162
- Decoration Slots – 3
The Sinister armor set is a fantastic choice, drawing its design and materials from Magnamalo. What makes it really appealing is how simple it is to obtain – you don’t need any rare or difficult-to-find components.
Beyond its solid defense and three decoration slots, this gear offers powerful benefits: Hth Master (XL) rapidly fills your Kinship gauge after winning battles, Blightproof (L) protects against Blastblight, and Fortify (M) boosts your Attack and Defense when you’re low on health.
Death Garon Armor – Ebony Odogaron
- Defense – 164
- Decoration Slots – 1
Similar to the Sinister set, the Death Garon set is quite simple to craft. You only need parts from Ebony Odogaron and materials you probably already have from fighting other monsters.
While its defenses aren’t particularly strong, this character excels thanks to its unique Skills. ‘Salt In Wound,’ ‘Fortify,’ and ‘Dragon Attack Boost’ all combine to make it a powerful threat when under pressure, and help you inflict significant damage on opponents.
Goss Harag Armor – Goss Harag
- Defense – 164
- Decoration Slots – 3
Okay, so the Goss Harag armor isn’t quite as defensively powerful as some of the very best late-game sets – it’s about ten points weaker in Defense. But honestly, it still stacks up really well against those tougher armors, and that’s mostly because it’s just so adaptable. It lets you build for a lot of different playstyles, which more than makes up for the slight difference in raw defense!
Besides offering good defense and room for customization, this set includes the Heroics, Dragon Buster, and Health Boost skills, which greatly improve your survivability in challenging fights.
Zinogre U Armor – Stygian Zinogre
- Defense – 168
- Decoration Slots – 1
This armor is made using parts from the Stygian Zinogre, and it embodies the monster’s powerful reputation. While the Zinogre U set doesn’t have exceptional resistance to any one element, it offers solid overall defense.
You only have one slot for a Decoration, but Skills can make up for this limitation. Using Dragon Attack Boost (XL), Dancer (L), and Partner (M) will keep your damage high, as long as you can dodge enemy attacks.
Rath Soul Armor – Azure Rathalos
- Defense – 168
- Decoration Slots – 2
As a Monster Hunter fan, I’m so excited about all the Rathalos variations! It’s not just the classic one – you’ll find regular and mutated Rathalos flying around Serathis. And if you’re lucky enough to take down an Azure Rathalos, you can craft the awesome Rath Soul armor set – it’s seriously cool!
This item has solid Defense and Decoration, and its resistances are okay. However, its real strength lies in its Skills. With high levels in Critical, Critical Kinship, and All-Out, you’ll inflict a lot of damage – just be mindful of your Stamina.
Arkvulcan Armor – Arkveld
- Defense – 170
- Decoration Slots – 1
The Arkvulcan armor set, inspired by Monster Hunter Wilds’ Arkveld, doesn’t let you customize your build as much as Arkveld’s weapons. Instead, it focuses on providing excellent protection against a wide range of attacks.
The Arkvulcan armor set is excellent, offering 170 Defense and helpful skills like Synchronize (XL) for more powerful double attacks, Stamina Surge (L) for faster stamina recovery, and Tenacity (M), which lets you survive a potentially deadly hit.
Malzeno Armor – Malzeno
- Defense – 170
- Decoration Slots – 1
Honestly, Malzeno is already one of the most awesome monsters they’ve added to the game in ages, but the gear you get from it? Seriously amazing. It looks fantastic and it’s really powerful – a perfect combo for any hunter.
You only have one slot for a Decoration, but this build offers solid resistances and excellent Skills. Specifically, it includes Self-Heal (XL), Weak Point (L), and Crit-Heal (M). These skills make it easier to land critical hits and ensure you consistently receive healing.
Gravios U Armor – Black Gravios
- Defense – 170
- Decoration Slots – 2
Black Gravios might not look like much, but it’s surprisingly one of the most useful monsters in the game. It’s a fantastic companion to have as a Monstie, provides excellent weapons, and you can craft some really powerful armor from its materials.
Beyond offering good customization options with its two Decoration slots, this gear also includes the Potential (L), Antiburn (L), and Dragon Buster (M) skills. These skills make you more durable overall and boost your damage against Wyvernfell monsters.
Tentacle Armor – Namielle
- Defense – 174
- Decoration Slots – 1
Namielle’s battles are exciting, pitting the power of Thunder against Water. Although their equipment isn’t always the most spectacular, they remain top-tier characters due to their overall strengths and versatility.
The Tentacle set offers top-tier Defense, but its real strength lies in its Skills. Skills like All-Out (XL), Stamina Boost (L), and Stamina Surge (L) significantly increase your attack power and effectively eliminate any extra Stamina drain.
Rimeguard Armor – Velkhana
- Defense – 174
- Decoration Slots – 1
Okay, so Velkhana looks super intimidating as the big monster in Iceborne, but honestly, it’s not that hard of a fight. I found that using a lot of fire attacks worked really well, and it lets you get the materials to craft their awesome armor set!
As a huge armor fan, I’m telling you, the Rimeguard armor is right up there with the best in terms of defense! Like a lot of armors that only let you add one decoration, it really shines with the skills it gives you. You get Kinship Skill+ (XL) which boosts your Kinship attacks, and then Panacea (L) and Divine Blessing (L) to help you take less damage and avoid nasty status effects. It’s a fantastic set for anyone who wants to be tougher and hit harder with their Kinship abilities.
