Boba Fett is arguably the most famous bounty hunter in the Star Wars universe and a truly iconic character. While he initially appeared as a mysterious figure in the original Star Wars trilogy, his unique look and understated personality immediately captivated fans. Over time, Star Wars expanded his backstory through the prequel films and other stories, even bringing him back after he seemingly fell into the Sarlacc Pit. Later, in 2015, the story revealed Boba Fett had a direct impact on the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. And in Star Wars #6 from Marvel Comics, he shared a secret with Darth Vader that dramatically altered the fate of the galaxy.
In The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett appeared with iconic villains like Darth Vader and Jabba the Hutt. He’s best known for delivering Han Solo, frozen in carbonite, to Jabba as a reward. Beyond that, Fett didn’t play a major role in the films before his defeat in the Sarlacc Pit. However, a recent Star Wars comic book (#6) revealed a surprising connection: Boba Fett was actually responsible for a key element in the relationship between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.
Boba Fett Told Darth Vader Luke Skywalker’s Name

The movie The Empire Strikes Back originally led viewers to believe Emperor Palpatine told Darth Vader that Luke Skywalker was his son. However, recent comics – Star Wars #6 and Darth Vader #6 – have shown us how Vader actually found out. After Luke destroyed the Death Star in A New Hope, Vader and the Empire were focused on finding the rebel responsible. Before the events of The Empire Strikes Back, Vader tasked the renowned bounty hunter Boba Fett with locating and eliminating the Force-sensitive pilot.
In Star Wars #6, Boba Fett finally learned the rebel pilot he was searching for was Luke Skywalker, after a long hunt and interrogating many people. Fett then ambushed Luke on Tatooine, leading to a fierce battle. Despite being temporarily blinded by a flash grenade and facing a formidable opponent, Luke won by using the Force, as Obi-Wan had taught him. However, Fett lived through the fight and reported back to Darth Vader, admitting he hadn’t captured Luke but revealing Luke’s last name – Skywalker. This is how Darth Vader discovered he had a son.
The impact of this shocking news on Darth Vader was explored further in Darth Vader #6, which detailed what happened next. As hinted at in the prequel films, Vader had always believed his children died with Padmé, and this belief fueled his turn to the dark side. Having hidden his former identity as Anakin Skywalker for years, learning that his son was actually alive brought back a flood of suppressed memories, causing him to angrily break a window with the Force. Now knowing he has a son, Vader vowed to claim Luke—and the entire galaxy—as his own. This marked the beginning of one of the most compelling and complicated father-son relationships ever seen in film.
Boba Fett’s Actions Led to the Most Important Moments in the Star Wars Franchise

Boba Fett unknowingly started a series of events that changed the galaxy forever, simply by mentioning the Skywalker name to Darth Vader. The original Star Wars trilogy is famous for the powerful relationship between Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader) and his son, Luke. The shocking reveal in The Empire Strikes Back that Vader was Luke’s father is considered one of the biggest twists in film, and Boba Fett was the catalyst for this discovery.
I always found it fascinating how Boba Fett’s relentless pursuit and skills as a tracker ultimately revealed Luke Skywalker’s identity. That single discovery sparked Vader’s intense desire to bring his son over to the dark side. It makes sense when you consider Boba’s own complicated upbringing – being a clone raised by Jango Fett, the man he was created from. Losing Jango to Mace Windu really sent Boba down a path of anger and a thirst for revenge. But ironically, it was Boba who started the chain of events that would eventually lead to Vader’s redemption, simply by revealing Luke’s name.
In Darth Vader #6, we see Vader intensely focused on getting back what he’d lost – and at that point, that meant convincing Luke to join him and rule the galaxy together. This discovery about their family connection would ultimately inspire Luke to try and save Vader. Vader initially thought he was too far gone to be redeemed, but Luke’s words clearly affected him, and he began to overcome his hatred. Ultimately, when Palpatine tried to kill Luke, Vader gave his life to destroy Palpatine, saving both his son and the galaxy.
I’ve always loved Boba Fett, and it’s amazing how much of a legend he became after we first saw him! He didn’t have a ton to do in the original movies, but fans clearly loved him, which led to him getting his own Disney+ show and a bigger place in the Star Wars story. But honestly, it’s what he did in Star Wars #6 that really cemented him as a huge deal – it proved he’s one of the most powerful people in the galaxy, period.
