Netflix is making some changes to its animated movie selection, and subscribers have only one week left to watch two popular titles. The streaming service recently added a lot of animated content, including films like The Lego Movie, Trolls, and The Bad Guys 2. However, two more movies will soon be removed from the platform.
I absolutely adore the Despicable Me movies, and I’m a little sad to hear that the first two – the ones that started it all with Gru, his hilarious Minions, and his family – are leaving Netflix on April 1st. These films were huge hits – Despicable Me made over $544 million, and Despicable Me 2 even more at $970 million! They’re some of the most successful animated movies ever made. While it’s disappointing to see them go, at least we’ll still be able to enjoy Despicable Me 3, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and all the fun Minions & More shorts on Netflix. It’s still a great collection, even without the originals!
The Despicable Me Franchise Is an Animated Powerhouse
With the release of Despicable Me, Illumination quickly became a leading animation studio. The film, about a villain who becomes a father, successfully combined touching moments with silly humor, a formula it’s continued in its sequels and prequels, appealing to audiences of all ages. Its simple but effective story earned high ratings – 80% from critics and 83% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes – and introduced the hugely popular Minions to the world.
The first Despicable Me movie kicked off a hugely successful animated franchise. Over six films, the series has earned more than $4 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film series ever and the 14th-highest-grossing movie franchise of all time. It’s also rare – only four animated franchises have had two movies earn over $1 billion globally. While ratings have varied – the original Despicable Me was a hit, but Minions received a 55% rating – the series rebounded with the popularity of Minions: The Rise of Gru. The franchise continues to expand, with Minions & Monsters set to release in July 2026.
Where to Stream Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 After They Leave Netflix?
The popular movies Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2 will no longer be available on Netflix, but you can still watch them on Peacock. Peacock also offers Despicable Me 4, Minions, and a variety of other DreamWorks favorites like Shrek and Madagascar.
