Kate Winslet will be in the new Lord of the Rings film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, but her role is currently being kept secret. The movie focuses on Aragorn’s search for Gollum, taking place between the events of The Hobbit and the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Given the limited number of significant female characters in the franchise, possibilities for who Winslet will play are somewhat restricted.
Elijah Wood is likely to return as Frodo Baggins, and Ian McKellan will reprise his role as Gandalf. Andy Serkis, who originally brought Gollum to life through voice acting and motion capture, is also expected to return. Kate Winslet’s role in the movie is currently unknown, sparking a lot of online discussion, and fans are also eager to find out who will play Aragorn, following Viggo Mortensen’s iconic performance. Here are three strong candidates for the part of Winslet, based on current speculation.
3) Galadriel
When Kate Winslet’s casting was revealed, many fans immediately speculated she might play Galadriel, a powerful and important female character from the Lord of the Rings universe. Galadriel played a key role in the original trilogy, offering guidance to the Fellowship after Gandalf’s fall and resisting the Ring’s power herself. She continues to be a central figure in the recent Prime Video series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
However, the amount of existing Galadriel material – and the fact that several actresses have already played her – makes it seem less likely Kate Winslet will take on the role. While it’s still possible, it would be somewhat unexpected if she were cast.
2) Gilraen
Fans have also speculated that Kate Winslet could play Gilraen, Aragorn’s mother, in The Hunt for Gollum. Since the film is expected to center around Aragorn’s story, it would be logical to include his mother, possibly through flashbacks. This fits the timeline of the story, as Gilraen dies while Aragorn is searching for Gollum. While she isn’t directly featured in the main Lord of the Rings books, she is mentioned in the appendices, making her a plausible character for the film.
1) Sméagol’s Grandmother
Many fans are surprised at the idea of Kate Winslet as a grandmother, likely because she’s still known for her roles in films like Titanic and is only 50 years old. However, a popular theory suggests she’ll play Sméagol (Gollum’s) grandmother. As shown in both the books and movies, Gollum was originally a hobbit named Sméagol. After murdering his cousin, Déagol, for the One Ring and becoming corrupted by its power, Sméagol was exiled and abandoned by his grandmother.
I can definitely see Kate Winslet taking on a powerful role, and while this character doesn’t sound like a huge one, the buzz is she’s a lead. Honestly, it’s still completely unclear who she’ll be playing in The Hunt for Gollum. With the film not due out until December 17, 2027, it looks like we’ll be guessing for a while!
