John Wick’s Blind Caine Spinoff Movie Gets Major Update

The world of John Wick has grown significantly since the first movie, now including four main films, the The Continental prequel series, and the Ballerina spinoff. Now, another new spinoff is in the works, focusing on Donnie Yen’s character, Blind Caine, and there’s exciting news for fans about the project’s development.

According to Deadline, the upcoming Donnie Yen-led spinoff movie is moving forward with production starting next month. This is exciting news for fans, and points to a potential early 2027 release, though a specific date hasn’t been announced. Donnie Yen will not only star but also direct, and Rina Sawayama will return as Akira in the currently untitled film.

The Return of Donnie Yen Could Create One Of The Best John Wick Projects Yet

Donnie Yen quickly became a popular character when he appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4, which is why Lionsgate decided to focus a new story on his character. However, producer Chad Stahelski shared with Den of Geek that it wasn’t easy to get Yen to agree to the role in the first place.

Honestly, a few things led to Donnie Yen joining John Wick: Chapter 4. He was really committed to his own film, Sakra – he directed and starred in it – and he’d already tackled a blind fighter role in Rogue One. It took Chad Stahelski a little while to get through to him, to show him what he envisioned for the character, but once Donnie got it, he really helped shape one of the most awesome assassins I’ve ever seen on screen.

Now directing as well as starring, Yen is determined to both challenge himself and elevate the action genre. He’s aiming to make what he considers the ultimate martial arts action film, so ambition certainly won’t be a problem with this project.

Yen was drawn to the character of Caine because of his internal conflicts – he’s a loving, responsible, and self-sacrificing person in a harsh world where actions have real consequences. This makes him a unique action hero. Yen sees this film as a chance to evolve the action genre, aiming to create the ultimate martial arts action movie. He wants to deliver the experience fans expect from John Wick, but also add more emotional resonance and a fresh visual style. As both the director and star, Yen is eager to use his decades of experience to create something both familiar and completely new.

We don’t have a release date for the John Wick prequel, Caine, yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do.
