HBO has given fans their first glimpse of the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, set to premiere in December 2026. When HBO announced a new take on Harry Potter, many people doubted it could live up to the beloved original films. However, the initial look at the series is truly impressive, showcasing excellent casting and a surprisingly complex storyline.
The upcoming Harry Potter TV series will show us parts of Hogwarts we never saw in the books. Photos from the set prove the show will explore a larger wizarding world, offering perspectives beyond just Harry’s. Because it’s a TV series, it will have more time to develop the characters and their stories. Early glimpses suggest this Harry Potter remake feels like a must-watch, and here’s a breakdown of the biggest new details and changes.
10. The Harry Potter TV Show Reveals More of Life with the Dursleys
The new Harry Potter trailer reveals we’ll see a significant amount of time spent at Harry’s childhood home, No. 4 Privet Drive. While some viewers might be surprised by the number of scenes showing Harry’s life before Hogwarts, it’s likely because filming these simpler, real-world shots was completed early, while more complex magical scenes requiring computer-generated imagery and visual effects are still in progress.
9. Harry is Bullied at School

The new Harry Potter series promises to delve deeper into Harry’s difficult childhood. We see scenes of Dudley Dursley and his friends bullying Harry at school, expanding on details briefly mentioned in the books. This also hints at Dudley’s future, as he eventually becomes involved with gangs.
8. Aunt Petunia Cutting Harry’s Hair

Petunia and Vernon Dursley constantly tried to convince Harry he was perfectly ordinary. The books explore this in more detail than the movies, and it seems the new TV series will include these scenes as well. The books reveal that Petunia particularly focused on trying to tame Harry’s unruly hair, which mysteriously kept growing back, almost as if it were fighting against her efforts.
7. Harry Learns About His Parents From Hagrid

The new Harry Potter TV series is taking its time getting to Diagon Alley, and includes scenes filmed on the London Underground. During the trip, Hagrid shares more details about Harry’s parents as he gets ready to show him the magical world.
6. Arriving at Hogwarts in the Great Hall

HBO is holding back the full reveal of Hogwarts castle for now. While we see some views of the approach, the initial footage doesn’t show the castle in all its glory – that’s being saved for the official trailers. Instead, we get a look at the impressive entrance hall, complete with staircases that students will use to explore the rest of the school.
5. Minerva McGonagall

The opening scenes also serve as a great way to introduce the main characters. Viewers get a charming first look at Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, the strict but kind-hearted teacher. While following Maggie Smith’s iconic performance, McTeer already seems perfectly cast in the role.
4. We’re Seeing More Lessons at Hogwarts

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’m really excited about the new TV show, and it sounds like we’re going to get a much deeper look at Hogwarts than we ever did in the films. They’ve confirmed the show will spend time inside the different classrooms – and I’m already picturing History of Magic! Let’s be real, that class always seemed to put poor Ron right to sleep, and even Harry looked a little overwhelmed by it all. I can’t wait to see how they bring those scenes to life.
3. Severus Snape

We only get a quick look at Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape – a fast-moving scene where he uses the Lumos spell to light up a dark hallway (the image shown is a clearer promotional shot from HBO). This scene likely shows the moment Snape nearly finds Harry, as his ability to read minds (Legilimency) detects Harry even while he’s hidden under an invisibility cloak. HBO seems to understand they can’t replicate Alan Rickman’s iconic performance and is instead going in a completely different direction.
2. Albus Dumbledore

John Lithgow is a great fit as Dumbledore. Because multiple actors have played the role, it’s easier to offer a fresh take on the character. The upcoming Harry Potter TV series will delve deeper into Dumbledore’s past, focusing on his hunt for the Horcruxes and showing more of his use of the Pensieve – a device he uses to revisit memories. This particular photo shows him with the Pensieve, confirming that scene will be explored.
1. Harry, Ron, & Hermione’s First Meeting

The heart of the story lies in the relationship between Harry and his best friends, Ron and Hermione (played by Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton). The film features many scenes of the three of them together, and a quick flashback to when they first met on the Hogwarts Express. This first meeting is portrayed as a bit clumsy and funny, with Ron playfully making a hand gesture resembling a lightning bolt.
